meeting 2025 08 29 n57 - JacobPilawa/TriaxSchwarzschild_wiki_6 GitHub Wiki
Context
We were concerned last time that my selection of BH > 3e9 was incomplete, so I went back to some of the larger compilation papers to track down any other potential missing galaxies. As a qucik reminder, here was the status of the list of galaxies in our brief meeting on Wednesday:

Triple Checking BH > 3 billion Msun
I started going through the tables of McConnell+13, Saglia+16, and Remco+16 containing the dynamical Mbh mass measurements:
Note these are NOT in a presentable format, I just needed this for my own
McConnell+13:

Remco+16: I've verified that the McConnell+13 and Saglia+16 galaxies are all in this list, too:

WISDOM:
I've checked through the 26 WISDOM papers and found: N4751 and 383. There's also N4261 which has an upper limit of 3.2e9, but no quoted best fitting value.
Sources not from Remco+16 or WISDOM:
H15
N315
Mrk 1216 (originally left off of Remco's list, but 2017 Walsh measurement brings it >3e9 Msun)

Additional Information and Background on Membership
I wanted to remind myself of each step of the environmental calculation since it's been awhile since we've really looked hard at things.
To start, here's some relevant information for the number of HDC/LDC members:
Galaxies NOT in HDC/LDC Catalogs:
NGC 6086
H15
Abell 1836 BCG
Mrk 1216
NGC 57 is only in LDC
NGC 4751 is only in LDC
NGC 3706 is only in LDC
I went ahead and requeried Crook+07 for the data, and here's the updated HDC/LDC galaxy information. Note that currently in the paper, we're using the HDC column information except for N57, which we set to 1 since that does not appear in the HDC. With the new galaxies, a few more do not appear in HDC so we'll need to make some decisions there.
As a quick reminder for the calculation here, I am taking the observed K band magnitudes reported in the Crook catalogs, converting them to absolute K with k - 5*log10(D) - 25, and cutting at Mk <= -23.0

Additional Information and Background on Halo Masses
We had put together a few different sources for the halo masses, which I wanted to specify/give some details about here. Unless otherwise specified, I'm using the projeted mass estimate (logMp) from the Crook+07 HDC catalogs.

I think I need to manually compute N6086/H15/A1836BCG/Mrk1216 (check these, this may be too many) because of which galaxies are in LDC/HDC and which are in 2MRS+, etc.
Seems like H15 and Abell1836BCG are not in 2MRS.
A summary of the above and where things stand...
In many ways, the work above is very much "scratch work", and I hope to clarify a few things here/spell out all the details of the environment calculation.
Some notes before the final plot:
I needed to get this posted on Github before we meet so aesthetically things aren't perfect. I need to adjust the text overlap and spacing.
I didn't get around to A1836BCG, NGC6086, and Mrk1216 and need to check these a bit more manually. These are not in the HDC or LDC catalogs, so I'm computing everything from the 2MRS catalog only. However this involves a bit of manually checking coordinates/sources/magnitudes, so there's just a bit of a delay on these three objects.
With that said, I've gone ahead and computed the environmental metrics for all the galaxies above 3 billion Msun:
Note that there's a bit of rounding in the Mbh's here; I took the values as reported in the paper but am plotting everything in log space, so there's a bit of a "precision" mismatch just in how I'm creating this table.
