meeting 2024 11 20 n57 - JacobPilawa/TriaxSchwarzschild_wiki_5 GitHub Wiki
Context
-
Just adding some additional plots/thoughts/information following our email exchange.
-
First, here's a quick plot showing the combined velocity maps (unsym) for N57. This is the raw data + corrected binning scheme.

Update V(R, Theta) Profiles
- The plots that had been on Github were in fact made before we fixed the bin flipping issue, so the profiles that are plotted on there are currently incorrect. I'll ensure that I go back and flag those plots for the future as being incomplete, with a redirect to this current page.
- I've gone ahead and recreated some versions of the plot with some information below.
GMOS Alone
- I've started by trying to create a few versions of the V(R, theta) plots with just the GMOS data. Roughly speaking, we have data from ~0 arcsec to ~4.5 arcsec in radius using the GMOS data, so I've tried a few different ways of splitting the data into the bins here:
- Note that it's a bit hard to see the y-axis on the lower right plots, so I've added the y-values for each point above each of the crosses.
- Note that in MASSIVE XIV, the GMOS kinematic PA is listed as 100+/-22 deg E of N, though this is also using the symmetric binning scheme for the kinematics.
- This basically means that I'm finding consistent (but just barely so) results with the published GMOS kinematic PA.

- And here's a comparison of the three fits above plotted together. They're nicely consistent!
- Note that one of the blue points (three bins) is hidden under the orange bin around ~3.5 arcsec in both plots.

Mitchell Alone (Coming soon!)
- The Mitchell bin spacing makes it a bit more finicky to do a nice set of groupings. Here's a rough plot showing the bin center's radius for the Mitchell data (excluding the outer 4 bins).
- Note the y-axis in the first plot is meaningless, I just wanted vertical lines near the bin centers of the Mitchell data.
- It seems to me like the data nicely fall into five groups of bins, but we can explore how robust the resulting shape is.

- And here are similar plots to those above for GMOS:

Combined Results:
- I've got a few versions of the combined GMOS + Mitchell data below, again excluding the outer 4 Mitchell bins. This first plot shows all fits plotted on a single set of panels, but I've gotten it broken out below to be a bit more clear:

- And here are all combinations of the fits above:
- I think that these plots seem to show quite a decent agreement between the GMOS and Mitchell data. There's a slight overlap in radius between the central Mitchell bins and the outermost GMOS bins, but I think the amplitudes and PA's are roughly consistent with each other given this overlap (that is to say, the innermost Mitchell bin and outermost GMOS bin seem to overlap quite a bit; there's a bit of noise going from the innermost Mitchell to the set of bins just beyond the innermost, but I think the scatter is not too egregious given the errorbars).
