Context

  • We were discussing in the meeting yesterday what to do about the outermost Mitchell data, and we wanted to compare the chi2 from a few cases:

    • Original 866 "base" models --> in the plots below, these data are called "raw"
    • Original 866 "base" models with the outer 4 Mitchell bins masked out in the fit --> in the plots below, these data are called "Mitchell masked"
    • Original 866 "base" models with the outer 4 Mitchell bins removed when computing the chi2 but still included in the fit; essentially exactly the same as "raw" but if raw was missing the outer 4 bins entirely --> in the plots below, these data are called "outer 4 removed"

  • The plots below show the three cases plotted against one another while also having each point colored by the parameters of our model so we can see if large discrepencies trace certain parameters.

  • Takeaways:

    • I think in general, the three different cases above track each other rather well with an overall offset between the three groups.
    • There's more scatter than I was expecting, but again, these models are from the original 866 models we submitted, so many of them have awful parameter choices/already don't have great chi2s themselves. The better fitting models have relatively less scatter than the worse fitting models.
    • Given that there really just seems to be overall shifts in the landscapes, I am inclined to continue doing the minimzations as I have been, but simply ignore that I have data in the outermost 4 bins (that is to say, move forward with the "outer 4 removed" approach).
      • This saves us from having to start from scratch on all the minimizations, and I can instead quickly reprocess all the results we have so far but simply ignore the outermost bins.
