Setting up the License for Breeding View Design and Analysis Tools - IntegratedBreedingPlatform/Documentation GitHub Wiki

Introduction

The BMS contains two components that require additional licensing:

  • BVDesign, which is the engine that generates randomized designs in the Study Manager.
  • Breeding View, which is a Windows-based application for data analysis that runs locally for the user. It must be installed locally by each user.

Both applications require a license account to be established with VSNi, the developer of both applications. Along with the license account, VSNI will provide a license file that must be installed with the BMS to facilitate communication with the licensing management server. One license account and file is used for both applications. The license file will need to be installed both on the server that is running the BMS, as well as on the local computer of each user who wishes to run the analysis tools.

Currently, the license is checked each time either application is used, so you will need to have an active internet connection in order to generate designs or perform data analysis.

Setting up BVDesign on the Server

BVDesign will be set up on the server automatically as part of the BMS installation process. You will need to perform these configuration steps after installation:

To use BV Design in your SERVER, you will need a license key. If you do not already have one, you can request a trial license key following this link: https://www.integratedbreeding.net/169/breeding-management-system/where-do-we-start

  • Download and install MS VC++ distributable (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53587)
  • If not existing, setup a system variable called vsni_LICENSE pointing to the license file directory (C:\BMS4\tools\breeding_view\bin)
  • Paste the license .lic file in 'C:<Documents>\VSNi\enterprise_license' directory.
  • Run BVDesign.exe -status from command line to see if the license checkout was successful

Setting up a standalone Breeding View 1.7 interoperable with BMS Server v8.0 or later

  • Download and install MS VC++ distributable (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53587)
  • Setup a system environment variable called vsni_LICENSE pointing to directory C:\BMS4\tools\breeding_view\bin
  • To use a standalone Breeding View, you will need a license key. After receiving the key, you will need to launch Breeding View. Launch the Breeding View application by double-clicking on the BreedingView entry in this folder: c:\BMS4\tools\breeding_view\analysis\bin

You should now see the Breeding View application. Click on the Help Menu and select the Activate License menu item:

This will open a dialog box where you should paste in your license key and then choose activate. Note that you will need to be online to activate but you will be able to run the application off-line once activated.

Setting up BVDesign and Breeding View for Desktop Version

To use Breeding View and BV Design in your DESKTOP COMPUTER, you will need a license key. If you do not already have one, you can request a trial license key following this link: https://www.integratedbreeding.net/169/breeding-management-system/where-do-we-start

You should now be set to use Breeding View and BV Design.
