Orbweaver is a love letter to SillyTavern.

I still use SillyTavern all the time. It's where I learned what AI roleplay could be, and nearly everything here started as a question of what one of my favorite parts of it would look like one step further on. If you're happy in SillyTavern, stay there. It's brilliant, and its community built most of what this hobby stands on.

Why I built it

I have twins. A roleplay session almost never ends where it started: I'd be mid-scene on my PC, get pulled away, and want to carry on from my phone without reloading, losing my place, or fighting the app. So Orbweaver keeps every device in step, live. A lot of the rest grew from wanting the hobby to fit around real life. Then I wanted my friends in the scene, then I wanted the story to keep score, and somewhere along the way a way to keep chatting from my phone turned into a multiplayer RPG engine. Scope creep is a hell of a drug.

Built on ideas from

  • SillyTavern: the character cards, presets, lorebooks, regex scripts, group chats and the whole way of thinking about a roleplay frontend. Orbweaver imports your SillyTavern library because it wouldn't exist without it.
  • STMP (SillyTavern MultiPlayer) by RossAscends: several humans in one SillyTavern scene. Orbweaver's shared rooms, multiple humans and multiple characters in one live scene, started from wanting that in every room.
  • Guided Generations by Samueras, which began as a Quick Reply set. Orbweaver's guided replies, corrections and steering come straight from it: typing a steer before you ask for a reply, rewriting a reply with a specific fix, drafting your own line.
  • Moonlit Echoes by RivelleDays: the Echo, Whisper, Hush, Ripple and Tide message styles. Orbweaver's chat styles are SillyTavern's Flat, Bubble and Document plus those five, rebuilt for its own theme engine.
  • RPG Companion by Marinara: tracked stats, quests, inventory and scene state in a panel beside the story. Orbweaver's game mode is directly inspired by it.
  • Marinara Engine by Marinara and the Pasta-Devs team: a fellow open-source roleplay frontend I studied closely while building this. Several of Orbweaver's ideas, like reactions characters can join in on, smarter speaker targeting and parts of the image pipeline, started from seeing how Marinara Engine approached them.

From my own extensions

The Refinery grew out of two SillyTavern extensions I wrote first, CharacterTools and CardRefinery. If you used either one, thank you. CardRefinery's pitch was "Your Waifu Is Trash. Let's Fix That." Orbweaver started from fixing the card and grew into the whole table, and the Refinery is the part that still fixes the card. → Refinery

The persona pin started as PersonaPin, a small extension that locked a card's {{user}} to the persona that opened the chat. Orbweaver does the same, built in. → Characters and personas

Thank you

To everyone who writes cards, presets, lorebooks and extensions and shares them for free: this hobby runs on you.
