Firmware: GPS - ImpulseRC/OSD GitHub Wiki

Introduction

ImpulseOSD supports Ublox M8N and also the faster M8Q based GPS modules. There is no need to configure anything in the GPS since it is auto configured by ImpulseOSD during plug-in.

Betaflight users please make sure you read the GPS section here.

Magnetometer is completely optional - but recommended for GoPro Finder

It is not necessary to use a magnetometer for the home arrow or compass direction to work. With ImpulseOSD V39.12 or higher you have the option to "Trust" your magnetometer - in that case it will always use the mag data which results in a faster and smoother home arrow! Only activate the "Trust" option if you are 100% sure your magnetometer works correctly! Using a magnetometer involves several steps of manual calibration for it to work correctly. We strongly advise not to use a magnetometer if you are a beginner or this already sounds too complicated for you.

Attention CRSF/SBUS users: If you are not using a KISS or BF FC it is not recommended to use a Magnetometer. The tilt correction won't work (since we cannot get the accelerometer data from the FC) so the mag will only display the correct heading if it is level to the ground.

Mounting your GPS/Mag module

If you only want to use GPS you can mount the module anywhere you like as long as it is not obstructed to the sky while flying or sitting on the ground.

For Magnetometer use we recommend mounting the module so the arrow or notch on the module points towards forward flying movement. You can also mount the module 90 or 180 degrees rotated, however that will require a change in the Magnetometer configuration. For more details about the Magnetometer setup and calibration please read here.

GPS configuration

Enter the menu (yaw left while disarmed for more than two seconds), go to SETUP and then GPS

  • DISPLAY RELATED Configures look and feel of GPS data displayed.
  • REPLAY SETUP Configures the Replay Arrow/GoPro Finder. For more information read here.
  • ADVANCED Advanced GPS settings. Please do not change any of these settings if you have a M8N GPS (for M8Q only!!!).
  • MAGNETOMETER Configuration and calibration of your magnetometer. For more information read here.
  • WAYPOINTS You can configure up to 20 waypoints which will show similar to the home arrow on your OSD. For more information read here.
  • SAVE+EXIT: Save all changes (and also changes made in other menus except the VTX menu) and exit the menu.
  • BACK: Go back to Config Menu. Changes are not discarded, but they are not saved until you exit with SAVE+EXIT from any menu.

GPS Display Related configuration

Enter the menu (yaw left while disarmed for more than two seconds), go to SETUP and then GPS, then DISPLAY RELATED

  • ALTITUDE MODE: Altitude can be displayed relative to your home position(default) or sea level.
  • GPS COORDINATES: You can choose between decimal(default) or DMS GPS coordinate display.
  • COORD. SPACE: GPS coordinates can be displayed in two or one lines - depending on your desired OSD layout.
  • 3D SPEED: This will convert the 2D speed measured by the GPS into 3D if you are doing e.g. a long dive off a mountain.
  • TIME ZONE: The time zone you are in - usually set by the Windows GUI.
  • TIME FORMAT: 24h or 12h (AM/PM) format.
  • ARROW SIZE: Small or medium size arrow for the home, waypoint and replay arrows. The medium size arrow is more accurate (not available on Wolf V1+2).
  • SAVE+EXIT: Save all changes (and also changes made in other menus except the VTX menu) and exit the menu.
  • BACK: Go back to GPS Menu. Changes are not discarded, but they are not saved until you exit with SAVE+EXIT from any menu.

GPS Advanced configuration

NOTE: Do not mess with these settings if you have a M8N GPS. These are only intended for M8Q (or M9N) users! If you are flying in an area without SBAS support you can try turning it off (also on M8N). Do not change the satellite setting on a M8N module - that can lead to unstable results during RTH!

Enter the menu (yaw left while disarmed for more than two seconds), go to SETUP, then GPS and then ADVANCED

  • SBAS: Altitude can be displayed relative to your home position(default) or sea level.
  • SATELLITES: You can choose if the satellite label displays the satellites which are actually used by the GPS (USED) or the satellites that it sees (AVAILABLE). The AVAILABLE setting will result in a higher satellite number displayed.
  • UPDATE RATE: This is for M9N users only - will not work on any other GPS!!! You can select between 10Hz and 25Hz. 25Hz is a much smoother experience in many ways (altitude update, course, etc.). Note: RTH has not been tested well on 25Hz, so please be careful.
  • SAVE+EXIT: Save all changes (and also changes made in other menus except the VTX menu) and exit the menu.
  • BACK: Go back to GPS menu. Changes are not discarded, but they are not saved until you exit with SAVE+EXIT from any menu.
