ReVanced Manager Performance Analysis Report


1. Introduction

This report provides a detailed analysis of ReVanced Manager's performance across 10 typical user scenarios. Each scenario has been profiled for GPU rendering, overdrawing, memory management, and threading to understand application efficiency, identify potential bottlenecks, and recommend optimizations.


2. Scenario Definitions

The following scenarios capture common user interactions within the ReVanced Manager application, providing a basis for in-depth profiling and performance evaluation.

3. Profiling and Analysis

For each scenario, profiling tools were used to evaluate the following performance metrics: GPU rendering, overdrawing, memory management, and threading.

Scenario Analysis

Scenario 1: App Launch and Home Screen Navigation

In this scenario, the user opens the ReVanced Manager app and navigates to the home screen to view available options. The analysis will focus on how GPU rendering impacts the initial loading of the app and its smoothness as the home screen is displayed. Overdrawing will be examined to identify areas where the app might be unnecessarily rendering elements multiple times. Memory management will be assessed to determine if there are any leaks or inefficiencies during the app's startup, and threading will be analyzed to observe how the app handles multiple tasks during the launch process.

  • GPU Rendering Analysis:

Overall GPU Activity: The analysis shows a total duration of 1 minute and 33 seconds (1.55 minutes), with significant GPU involvement, although the app’s GPU workload appears to be intermittent rather than continuous. This suggests that while the app is active, the GPU is not constantly engaged, which could imply optimization opportunities for smoother transitions or background tasks.

Strengths:

The app doesn't show excessive GPU workload, and the time spent on rendering is relatively low compared to other resource-intensive tasks. The Sleeping state for the majority of time indicates that the GPU isn't being constantly taxed, which could be a sign of efficient use of resources.

Potential Problems:

Frequent waiting for GPU events, while not excessive, could signal that GPU tasks are being delayed, possibly due to inefficiencies in how GPU resources are allocated or managed. The app may benefit from improved GPU resource management to minimize idle times and reduce the frequency of waiting events.

Optimization Recommendations:

Rendering Pipeline: Given that most of the GPU’s activity is spent in "waiting" states, it’s essential to examine how GPU tasks are being triggered and whether the rendering pipeline is efficient. Minimizing delays between tasks and optimizing asynchronous GPU calls could smooth out the app’s launch experience. Micro-Optimizations: optimizing the long-running events associated with waiting for more time-sensitive tasks to process. While these delays are quite small in microseconds, they can accumulate over time, contributing to a perceived delay in responsiveness during app navigation.

Memory Usage: At the time of the launch, the app consumes around 354.2 MB of memory, with notable memory distribution as follows:

Java: 17.5 MB Native: 33.9 MB Code: 38.4 MB Others: 263.1 MB The total memory consumption appears to be significant, especially the "Others" category, which likely includes resources and temporary data being loaded during startup. To optimize, it's essential to analyze what falls under the "Others" category and determine if there are unnecessary objects being held in memory during app launch. Additionally, memory usage from the Flutter MainActivity (38.1 MB of Native memory) and Java (10.9 MB) could also be reviewed for potential optimizations.

Memory Allocation: The absence of allocated memory tracking could point to areas where memory management practices need to be reviewed. For instance, garbage collection (GC) might not be happening frequently enough or the app might be holding onto resources longer than necessary, contributing to higher memory usage during the initial launch. The GC seems to have been called twice in the time we inspected the app.

Optimization Recommendations: Memory Optimization: Look into the high "Others" category and the memory retention patterns. Optimizing the loading and disposal of objects, especially during startup, will help reduce the app's memory footprint. Consider using memory management libraries for potential leak detection.

During the App Launch and Home Screen Navigation scenario, the profiler provides critical insights into the app's CPU, memory, and thread usage, highlighting potential performance issues and areas for optimization.

A total of 72 threads are recorded during the launch phase, including essential threads like RenderThread, UI, and Raster. This indicates that the app is performing multiple concurrent operations, possibly for UI rendering and Dart execution. However, the presence of several threads, such as AsyncTask and DartWorker, suggests that some tasks may be running in parallel, which can help with performance but also adds complexity. Optimizing thread management and ensuring that tasks are properly distributed across threads can reduce the load on critical threads like UI and RenderThread.

Optimization Recommendations: Thread Management: Review the threads to ensure that no thread is being blocked or overburdened. Specifically, avoid heavy computations or network requests on the main thread, which could lead to janky UI or slow app startup.

Scenario 2: Application Patching Workflow

In this scenario, the user utilizes the ReVanced Manager's patching feature to customize an application. The analysis will focus on GPU rendering during the patching process, including animations, progress bars, and UI responsiveness. Overdrawing will be examined for areas with redundant rendering during the patching workflow. Memory management and threading will also be assessed to identify inefficiencies or bottlenecks while the app handles patching tasks, which may involve reading APK files, applying patches, and saving outputs.


GPU Rendering Analysis

During the patching workflow, the GPU workload increases as animations and progress bars are rendered, particularly when the patching process begins. Key observations include:

  • Overall GPU Activity:

    • GPU utilization is higher than in the app's initial launch scenario, with intermittent spikes corresponding to progress bar updates and transitions.
    • Rendering is generally smooth, but minor delays occur during progress bar updates, possibly due to inefficient handling of animation frames.
  • Potential Problems:

    • GPU waiting events are observed during complex patching tasks, suggesting that asynchronous rendering might not be optimized.
    • The progress bar's animation could be causing unnecessary GPU spikes due to redundant frame redraws.
  • Optimization Recommendations:

    • Optimize animations for the progress bar by reducing frame redraws and using lightweight rendering techniques.

Overdrawing

The patching workflow involves UI elements like progress bars, status messages, and buttons. Overdraw analysis reveals:

  • Findings:

    • Minor overdrawing is detected in the progress bar area (Green: one overdraw).
    • No severe overdrawing (Red or Pink) is found, but areas with Green overdraw could be optimized further.
  • Optimization Recommendations:

    • Reduce overdraw in progress bar regions by avoiding unnecessary layering of background and foreground elements.
    • Use flat designs or merge overlapping UI layers to minimize overdraw.

Waiting for GPU: Several events, such as "waiting for GPU", indicate that the application is waiting for the GPU to complete tasks. For example, the top event "waiting for GPU" occurred multiple times, and the longest waiting times were recorded at around 1 ms to 1.96 ms. These relatively short delays suggest that while the app may not be highly GPU-bound, there are brief periods where rendering tasks are queued for processing.

Rendering Efficiency: The fact that there are several waiting for GPU events with low CPU self-time and high wall time (e.g., waiting for GPU... Wall Duration 1.96 ms and waiting for GPU... Wall Duration 1 ms) suggests that while GPU utilization is generally low, there are moments where the rendering pipeline could benefit from optimization. If these waits are repeated often in high-demand scenarios, it could indicate that the GPU is not being efficiently utilized, possibly due to delays in resource loading or synchronization issues.

Strengths:

A key indicator of memory leaks is when memory consumption keeps increasing without being released, even after performing certain actions or navigating between screens. This doesn't seem to happen

The allocated memory of 340,774 bytes is relatively high, but there is no specific reference to increasing memory consumption over time. The total memory usage reported here is 395.8 MB, with 13.1 MB allocated to Java memory, 90.4 MB to native memory, and 253.1 MB to "Other" memory, which suggests that a significant portion of memory usage is coming from native or system resources.

In the context of Browse Patch Library, this is an important consideration because if the app consumes more memory for browsing patches (due to handling large datasets or images), it could slow down the app or cause performance bottlenecks.

From the profiler output, we can identify several key threads:

If there were any potential issues, such as locking on the main thread, they would most likely arise from:

The analysis will focus on GPU rendering during the patch application and log visualization, the presence of overdrawing in the logs UI, memory usage changes during and after the patch application, and threading for tasks like saving changes and displaying logs.

There are no direct indications of memory leaks, and the RAM usage is relatively stable. The data provided suggests that memory allocations and deallocations are occurring efficiently, though it's important to verify certain aspects of memory usage to ensure optimal performance.

The profiler data does not show any obvious memory leaks. The memory consumption appears stable with no unusual increases in heap size over time. The number of allocations and deallocations is within expected limits, and there are no signs of excessive retained objects. However, ongoing monitoring is recommended to ensure no latent leaks occur, especially in areas related to settings updates or background tasks.

The app's memory consumption is currently at 392.9 MB, with Java memory accounting for 15.7 MB, and Native memory at 92.9 MB. These figures are within a reasonable range for typical applications.
