Week 1 Assignment (CIA, Security Camera, and Enigma Research) - Hsanokklis/2022-2023-Tech-journal GitHub Wiki
- A common method of categorizing security issues is the CIA triad: Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability. Which of these are affected if someone knows your campus login and password? Describe the risk.
Confidentiality is breached in this situation. This is because someone gained unauthorized access to information that was meant to be private and secure, thus breaching the confidentiality of the information.
- Do you think security cameras are a positive move or negative. Explain Do some research and cite some examples of uses of security cameras in good or bad ways.
Pros:
Deter crime
- With the prospect of being watched, crime can be deterred with security cameras. According to a study by UNC, outdoor security cameras reduce property crime by at least half.
- People may be more cautious about committing a crime or doing something bad in an area that is under survallience.
Monitor scenarios/activities
- Indoor Security cameras can be useful in schools, and homes to watch children in case something bad were to happen.
- Many indoor/home cameras can connect with an app on your phone that allows you to get alerts when something suspicious or unknown comes into view.
- Can be good for businesses to monitor everyday business practices
Maintain Records
- Can help record how an event like a crime, accident, or fight unfolds.
- Can help businesses monitor traffic
- Can help people keep a record of who visits their property.
- Can record criminal events
Arrive at Right Decisions
- A lot of cameras have video and audio capabilities. This can help with proving claims true in legal situations or any situation you may need may want to have documented.
Cons:
Lack of Privacy
- Sometimes surveillance cameras can be installed in places that people are not aware of, which can be a breach of privacy.
Costly
- bigger successful surveillance system is very expensive to implement, especially with cameras that have audio and recording capabilities.
Vulnerable
- Weather can break outdoor cameras
- Cameras can be covered up which would render them useless
- They are often easy to gain access to(I have seen many YouTubers easily hack CCTV cameras)
Won't stop crime
- Surveillance cameras can deter crime but they cannot stop it. There are plenty of people who are fine committing crimes with cameras in the room, I mean all they would really have to do is wear a mask.
There are many pros and cons to security cameras, but I think overall the positive outweighs the negative of surveillance systems. This doesn't mean that I think security cameras are perfect; They still have a lot of flaws that need to be improved upon, but I think that we are better off with security cameras than without them.
- In World War II, Enigma was an encrypting device. How was that encryption code broken?
In 1932, the Polish and French worked together and broke Enigma. The Polish mathematician Marian Rejewski used permutation theory and weaknesses in the German encryption protocols to crack the code of the code keys used by the Enigma plugboard machine. The Germans then made the enigma harder to crack, thus rendering the original cracking of the enigma code ineffective. The British team Ultra then began trying to crack the code led by Alan Turing. Alan Turing created a machine called the Bombe, which he used to decipher Enigma messages. One of the biggest flaws of the Enigma is that a letter in a message never becomes itself. This means that if you are encrypting a B, it can be any letter but a B. This was the flaw that Alan Turing used to crack the enigma code. He used words from the German messages that he knew were going to be the same every day, such as “Heil Hitler” or “Weather report” to figure out what the setting for enigma was for the day.
