6 Troubleshooting approaches

• The top-down approach

start with the top layer of the OSI reference model (application)

• the bottom up approach

Start with the bottom layer of the OSI refence model (physical)

• The divide and conquer approach

Split up the problem

• the follow the path approach

start on one side and test each hop/connection along the way (can use traceroute/tracert)

• the spot the difference approach

comparing configurations software versions, hardware, or other device properties between working and nonworking situations (try running show running-config in Cisco IOS)

• The move the problem approach

Try physically swapping components and observe if the problem is still there or if new problems arise
