The job of a Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP), Server is to automictically provide and assign IP addresses to devices that are added to a network. A device that is added to a network will make a DHCP request to the DHCP server. Once received, the DHCP server will send back an IP address with a dedicated IP address for the device.
