Our Vision - HornOfSilicon/org GitHub Wiki

About us

A global software developer community, based in the Horn of Africa and its diaspora.

Our goals

1- Maintain a network for active software developers

2- Participate in a set of activities that advance the careers of software developers.

Scope

While our network welcomes discussions on any topic, our scope is limited to only what contributes to the software development profession. Therefore, we are not actively involved in launching start-ups, seeking funds and similar activities.

Membership

Any active developer who is any of the following:

  • studied or studying computer science or related degrees
  • has an equivalent professional experience
  • wants to pursue a career as a software developer

Horn Ambassadors

Horn Ambassadors are professionals and intellectuals who are not developers but are interested in our activities.

Founders / Chairing committee

We do not have founders. We are a group of developers who met to increase our cooperation and learning. However, we have a chairing committee whose role is to set and protect the goals of our community.

Chairing Committee Selection

a chairing committee member has to be among the top contributing members. A contribution is further defined by the HornHero section (see below)

Horn Advocates

A Horn Advocate is a designated member of a city or university who takes the initiatives of inviting new members to our community.

Examples:

  • Addis Ababa Professional Horn Advocate
  • UK Professional Horn Advocate
  • Moqdisho Professional Horn Advocate
  • Khartoum University Horn Advocate
  • etc....

Preferred Stack/Technology

We support everything our members know and love. We are not affiliated to or biased against any large tech organization/school of thought.

HornHero Points

HornHero is a point system that calculates each member's developer activities. These activities should be among what we consider a valuable software development practice, such as:

  • StackOverflow answers
  • Blog posts
  • GitHub contributions
  • Published apps
