Indoor CRC Black Carpet Setup

For running the HPD F1 on CRC black carpet, you will need to make a few small adjustments depending on the track you race at. Most require lexan bodies to prevent tearing of the carpet. The Montech F18 body fits the EVO2/3/4 with minimal trimming. In addition, the Montech front and rear wings also fit the chassis without modifications. I used the Montech MTB-015-007 rear wing and MTB-017-006 front wing. If you wish to run a carbon/steel axle from a Roche/Exotek/CRC, you will need to print some adjusters so the rear pod works with the standard 1/4 flanged bearings. You can print them here: Axle Adapters. They are able to be rotated to adjust the wheel base and/or ride height to compensate for foam tire wear or ride height adjustment. For the updated EVO4 "race suspension", I used the following setup:

Front

  • Xray 372180 Front Spring - C 3.5 (up or down one step as needed for track layout)
  • 10k lube on front kingpins
  • 1 degree camber
  • 0.5 degree toe out
  • 2 caster spacers in front of upper a-arm, 1 caster spacer in rear
  • Exotek Red compound rubber tires
  • 186mm width
  • 4mm ride height

Rear

  • Xray 373588 Rear Spring - C 1.8
  • 30k lube in rear damper tubes
  • 35 wt oil in Tamiya TT01 aftermarket shock - spring rate unknown :)
  • Exotek double red compound rubber tires
  • 189mm width
  • 4mm ride height

This setup gives a good balance IMO of turn in and stability. I played with the rear spring rates and the stiffer rear keeps the front inside tire down under tight corners and long sweepers. Caster has a large impact on the handling of the car indoors on tight tracks so try and adjust the spacers as needed as well.

For handy reference, here are some US based class rules for indoor carpet racing. The EVO2/EVO3 car will need weight added but fits within the class (My car as it sits has 187 mm width, 265 mm wheelbase).
