Weaver Knights - Hamlaser/The-Spine-of-the-World GitHub Wiki
Established originally as a vector for peacemaking between the dragons and the clay-folk of the Spine, weaver knights were an order of warriors trained from a young age to ride dragons. Weaver knights are a distinct class from the changeling social construct of knighthood, though some changeling knights are also weaver knights. Historically, it is also believed to have lent changeling knighthood its name. In the beginning, weaver knights served Selune, and acted as the military arm for her city of the dead. This, and the broad overlap in duties they shared with couriers, lead to the knights being known colloquially as the moon guard.
After the fall of the Astral Court, and the exodus of Zenith’s large population of stationary changelings, the practice of restricting knighthood to those that could ride dragons fell out of fashion. There simply weren’t enough dragons to do so. Most of the dragons of the Astral Court left the Spine willingly, and those that acted in tandem with Plurne to flood the archipelago were killed or forced to evacuate. The Walking City of Khaemery is the only contemporary city with a large enough population of true dragons to continue the weaver knight practice of warrior life-bonds, but the manpower required to maintain the socioeconomic needs of a city its size dictates that most changelings adopt a consistent humanoid form. This division of labor has prompted a social organization still predicated on the concept of one being a dragon or a knight, but its practical application is something like: knights perform services and study crafts while dragons, who are mutable in form, strive ever to protect and inspire their kin. It should be noted that dragons also labor, but there are certain tasks of production that require many years of study and consistently opposable thumbs.
Modern weaver knights have no formal order, and are much more akin to a sect of Constancy than they are a military. They still hold fast to the tenets of their establishment, oftentimes swearing oaths of dedication, but enact them without their former collaborative might. The tenets of weaver knighthood are as follows:
No Gods, No Kings. Life is too short to permit the mistreatment of others. Strike those down that would abuse the faith of their people.
Time Breaks All Things. The wheel of time is not immutable. Fate changes. However, there are those that choose to avoid the consequences of their own actions, or strive to preserve the status quo at a great cost. This is impermissible. When one betrays the world for their own gain, may your rebuke be swift, and your sword swifter.
This Story of Ours. Speak life into the world around you. Know people and be with them. Kindle kindred hearts around the world, and bring joy through your speech when you can. Violence is a useful tool, but its goal should always be equity.
The Last Knight Alive. Your impact on the world begins and ends with you. For all you know, you are the only one in any given situation who can help. If you can make a difference, make it.
(This is for Lu’s paladin oath, it’s likely their primary codex would take much longer to express these sentiments.)
