General: UI Layout and terminology

Before you start using GoldenCheetah let's get familiar with the general UI concept / screen layout and the terminology used for the different sections of the screen. This will help you in walking through the further documentation.

The good news - the UI Layout and user interaction is basically the same on all GoldenCheetah views. But each view has its specific purpose and thus deviates in the content shown to the user.

Main Window Elements

Looking at the figure above you find the following elements:

Menu Bar

The Menu Bar contains all the menu options for GoldenCheetah. The screenshot shown is from a Windows 7 version. On Mac OSX or modern Linux distributions the Menu Bar will appear on the top (border) of the screen.

Note: The Menu Bar layout and content is the same for all views and not configurable.

More information on the Menu Bar and the different menu functions is provided here: Menu Bar: Functions

Tool Bar

The Tool Bar contains buttons to get quick access to functions that are also available within the menu bar. We place them in the Tool Bar because they are used very commonly, and it is handy to be able to get at them quickly and easily.

Note: The Tool Bar layout and content is the same for all views and not configurable.

More information on the Tool Bar and the available functions is provided here: Tool Bar: Functions

Athlete Tabs

These are present only when you have more than one athlete open simultaneously and they are used to switch between them and to drag and drop activities, intervals or date ranges when comparing across athletes.

Scope Bar

The Scope Bar is used to select the GoldenCheetah view. Each view offers different functionality, as their names suggest, in v3.6 the Scope Bar was changed to a left sidebar.

More information on the Scope Bar and the available view is provided here: Scope Bar: Views

Main View

Selected via the Scope Bar the main view shows the charts and windows relevant to the view in question. Note that the view can be shown in a tabbed style or a scrolling set of tiles. The only time the main window looks different to that shown above is when running GoldenCheetah for the first time or when no data is available. In this case a splash screen is shown to assist new users in importing data or setting up devices etc.

Charts Bar

The Charts Bar shows the different charts for the view active in Scope Bar. The Charts Bar is your selection of charts which are configured for a specific view of the Scope Bar.

Note: The Charts Bar differs for each view of the Scope Bar and is configurable. With the installation GoldenCheetah provides a standard configuration for the Chart Bar for all views.

If you want to add, delete Charts or reset the Charts Bar to the GoldenCheetah defaults, you find the details here: Chart Bar: General handling

Cache Refresh Progress Bar

This blue line appears just below the charts bar when a cache refresh is ongoing showing the operation progress and it disappears on completion. The cache is intended to speed-up chart display pre-computing activity metrics and derived data. Usually cache maintenance goes unnoticed since it is incremental when activities are added, or their data or metadata changes, but there are cases -s.t. modifying user defined metrics or upgrading GoldenCheetah versions- which require full re-computation. This process may take a while depending on the number of activities, intervals, user metrics and hardware configuration, so you will be cued when it is happening since performance can be degraded and charts summarizing information from long periods can change until completion, to minimize this impact update goes backward in time so the recent activities are updated first. If GoldenCheetah is closed before completion the refresh will start a new the next time the athlete is used.

Side Bar

The Side Bar contains selections and lists that are most appropriate for what a user is currently doing.

Note: The Side Bar changes as different views are selected in the Scope Bar.

More information on the Side Bar in general and the variants per view is provided here: Side Bar: General handling

Compare Pane

The Compare Pane appears at the lower border of the Main View - if activated. It allows comparison of date ranges or activities and intervals (depending on whether you are on Trends or Activities). In Diary and Train the Compare Pane is not available.

More information on the Compare Pane in general and the variants per view is provided here: Compare Pane: General handling

Workout Control

The Intensity Adjustments and Workout Control pane replaces the Compare pane when in the Train view.
