Title: UN and OpenWallet Collaboration for Digital Public Infrastructure

Youtube Video

Description

The UN sees public sector adoption of open source software as playing a key role in governments’ digital transformation. The OpenWallet Forum, building on the success of the OpenWallet Foundation, will offer a platform for multistakeholder cooperation to integrate wide-ranging requirements from governments and companies into coordinated policies and technical standards for digital wallets. The forum will also be supported by the UN International Computing Centre (UNICC) and the Government of Switzerland.

Takeaways

⚡ The Open Wallet Foundation was founded to advance a "plurality of interoperable wallets". After almost two years, there are now a plethora of repositories in the OWF Github, in various stages of development.

⚡ For an open source effort, the OWF has an impressive amount of government participation. This new effort with the UN seeks to make the output of the OWF more consumable by governments, and reduce reliance on a single company or domain.

⚡ It's anticipated that Wallet technology will play an important part in solving foundational identity challenges. Countries are hoping wallets will help them "leap frog" over paper-based systems like birth-certificates.

⚡ Wallets require more complex trust relationships. Federations can make interdomain trust more efficient--e.g. even allow a domain to require the use of OWF components. We're not "leap-frogging" over existing federated identity... we're complicating existing federations with all sorts of new considerations.
