What is GMM?

Gloss Mod Manager, abbreviated as GMM, is a comprehensive game mod manager. I started developing this Mod manager in June this year. There are two purposes:

  1. Lower the threshold for using Mods, so more players will not give up on the fun of Mod because they don't know how to install it.
  2. As the largest Mod resource website in China (claim to be) , how can there be no tool of its own?

So, GMM was born.

How to download?

At present, the available download channels maintained by me are as follows:

In addition, others are not released by me. If you downloaded from other places, I cannot guarantee whether there are Trojan viruses in your file, But you can check through the following methods whether you have been hacked by Trojans:

  • GMM will not and does not need to request administrator permission from your computer during installation, use or operation (except when you choose "install for all users" or install to the "Program Files" directory on the disk during installation)
  • GMM passed the virus scan verification of ViruStotal. You can upload the files you downloaded to ViruStotal to perform virus scanning. If any item turns red, please delete it immediately and re-download it from the links I provided above.

How to install?

  • Just run the downloaded Gloss Mod Manager_1.*.*.exe program,
  • Then follow the normal steps like next, install, finish.
  • You can install it into any directory except Program Files and Program Files (x86)
  • Even if there are Chinese characters and spaces, there should be no problem (in theory).

How to run

After you finish the installation, you can find the GMM program running icon on the desktop and in the Win menu.

Run it !

When you open, first to the "settings/设置", find the Mod storage, change it to any other path, by default it will be in the My Documents/Gloss Mod Manager on the C drive, but here will store the downloaded compressed files, Mods added to the manager, and software update-related files will be stored here. The option Automatically add to manager after download is recommended to be turned on, as for the language and boot, you can set it according to your own needs.

Select Game

After setting up the manager, find Manager, click Select Game, then find your game launcher in folder, if your game is downloaded from Steam, the tools will automatically locate to the Steam game installation directory. Here, I take the game "Starfield" as an example.

Add Mod to GMM

  1. Download Mod externally and add it to GMM
    • Plan A: Click Import Mod button , select you Mod's zip file.
    • Plan B: Drag and drop the compressed package into here.
    • Also, GMM supported .zip .rar .7z and .gmm files.
    • If the Mod you downloaded is not a zip package, it is recommended to manually compress it into a compressed package.

Install and Uninstall Mod

Before starting to install the Mod, I need to say a few words:

  • First, GMM will automatically identify the types of Mods added to the manager. You should not modify these types at will!
  • Then, some games may have bugs in the one-click installation and one-click uninstallation. If it is found to be ineffective, just manually click uninstall and install.
  • Next, when there is a conflict in the Mod files, you have a manual handling method. For example, if you installed two Mods that modify horses in the "El Elden Ring" Mod, but only one Mod can work theoretically. You can reinstall the Mod that you want to take effect, and it will overwrite the other Mod.
    • I might implement automatic handling of such conflicts in the future, but currently, you can only handle them manually.
    • Just remember that the last installed Mod will definitely work.
  • Finally, you need to learn how to use the Mod as described by the author in the Mod introduction before asking why it doesn't work. Isn't there a possibility that the Mod has taken effect, but you didn't see it.

You only need to click this switch under the 'status', to install and uninstall the Mod.

The step of changing the status from 'uninstalled' to 'installed' is called 'install'. The step of changing the status from 'installed' to 'uninstalled' is called 'uninstall'.

In some games, during the installation process, a box will pop up asking you to download the pre-requisites. In this case, you generally simply click 'OK'.

Start the game

GMM can directly start the game, so that you can play directly without switching screens to other places. The normal game does not necessarily need to be launched through the manager to enable Mod, the launch game here is just for your convenience.

Except for the following games:

  • Elden Ring (Only supports mods for Steam version
  • Stardew Valley
  • Starfield (SfSE tools )

Manual Installation of Mods

In some cases, the manager may not be able to install the Mod automatically for you and you need to handle it manually. These are generally divided into the following situations:

  • Mod type is 'unknown'

    • At this time, there is a remedy. Find the dropdown box under 'Operation' on the far right of the Mod list, and then select 'Open', which will help you open the directory where the Mod is located. Picture
    • You take a look, if you encounter the case where there is a compressed file in it, like the one below, Picture
    • At this time, you can drag and drop the compressed package into the manager, and you can see that the manager has correctly identified the Mod type. Picture
  • Installation types not supported by the manager

    • There is no remedy for this, you have to install it manually. Open the Mod directory through the method above, then find the original author’s publication address, and install according to the author's instructions.

What to do if the Mod has no effect after installation?

This question counts as the most frequently asked by me, usually divided into the following situations:

  • The Mod is outdated and no longer adapts to the new version of the game,

    • Solution: No solution, urge the author to update, or go and see if anyone else has helped to update and adapt to the new version of the game.
  • Because you changed the Mod type, the manager installed it somewhere else.

    • In this case, I suggest you uninstall the Mod first, then re-add it to the manager and reinstall it.
    • I'll say it again: GMM will automatically identify the types of Mods added to the manager. You should not modify these types at will!
  • Because the manager recognizes the unknown type of Mod to generic type.

    • This situation may currently occur in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Elden Ring.
    • You open the Mod directory, and then see if it appears like the one below, where there is a compressed package nested in the compressed package, simply drag and drop the compressed package into the manager and then install it.
  • You are playing Elden Ring or Stardew Valley, but you did not use the manager to start the game.

    • Solution: Start the game with the manager.
  • Assured that everything is fine, but the Mod is still invalid

    • It may be a problem with the manager. Join the group and give me detailed feedback on the problem. Discord
