Creating a Post

  1. Log into the WordPress dashboard.

  2. Go to Posts > Add New.

  3. Choose a category for your post. There are four major categories: Features, Ideas, News, and Events. The category you choose controls where that post will show up on the website, as well as the type of content your post will support.

    1. Medical Supply Chains posts use the same fields as Ideas posts, and Vancouver Institute posts use the same fields as Events posts.

    2. The Exclude from Home category prevents posts from being displayed on the homepage. Vancouver Institute posts are excluded by default.

General Post Content

  • All posts should have a "featured image" set. You can then select one of four Image Display Styles: Full Width, Full Screen, Square, and Hidden.

  • If you select Full Width, you can further select whether you want the image aligned to the top, middle, or bottom. If you select Full Screen, you can add an image shadow to make the text overtop the image stand out a bit more.

  • The Direct Link field allows you to link the post directly to an external site. If there isn't a direct link set, the post will just link to itself on the GRC website (e.g. globalreportingcentre.org/name-of-post)

  • In addition to a "featured image," all posts should have 'excerpts' - these are short intros that entice people to click on them. You'll see them on the home page and on (for example) the Features page. A good example from the Atlantic would be What will happen if lawmakers can no longer meet because of the coronavirus?

  • Some post types, such as Features and Ideas, also include a description field. These should provide more detail than the excerpts. If these fields are not filled in, the post will pull the excerpt by default.

Feature Posts

  • Feature posts should include a feature description. This provides more detail than the excerpt. It appears on the Features page. They should also include a feature type (e.g. podcast) and a display format (which controls how large a project appears on the Projects page.)

Ideas Posts

  • Ideas should include a longer description, a defined author, and a bio for the author.

Events Posts

  • These require a Start Date and Time, and can optionally include an event location, a link to register/buy tickets, and a link to a map of the venue's location.
