  1. Designers: Ruchil D Jain, Hrishikesh Kulkarni, Shashank S H, Pramod Dollin
  2. Clients: Prof. Doddesh Sir
  3. Users: Medical Shop Owner
Sl no Questions such as This question helps the designer to
1. Do you have any electrical supply in your shop? Establish client’s objectives
2. What are the average customers do visit your shop every day? Establish client’s objectives
3. What is the space you will provide to mount this machine? Establish client’s objectives
4. Do you want the machine to arrange the tablets in alphabetical order? Establish client’s objectives
5. Do you want the machine to have power backup? Establish client’s objectives
6. What is the budget for your need? Identify constraints
7. What is the maximum weight that a machine can be? Identify constraints
8. What is the maximum time duration you need the machine to work? Identify constraints
9. How much load the machine be able to hold? Identify constraints
10. Do you want the machine to hold and drop medicines directly to the pharmacist's table? Establish functions
11. Do you want the machine to display cost and generate the bill? Establish functions

Obtain the information through basic survey and customer interaction and arrive at requirements

Observation and from Lit. Survey Requirements
1.Based on the cost of competing products in the market! The cost of machine should lie within range of 4000 to 5000 Rs only.
2.Based on the working time of other machines! The machine should work up to 12 hours continuously.
3.Based on the behaviour of other machines! The machine should be user-friendly which doesn’t harm the user.
4.Based on the size and shape of other machines! The machine should have a simple shape which could fit within 3*3 metres size.
5.Based on the weight of other machines in market! The machine should be easy to lift and handle(1.5 kg)

1.1 Identify client’s objectives

Step 1: Prepare a list of design objectives

Sl.No Objectives
01 The machine must be made safe.
02 The machine must be affordable.
03 The machine should be user friendly.
04 The machine should have a power backup.

1.2 Prioritize the identified design objectives

Priority among various objectives is set through a technique called Pair-wise Comparison Chart (PCC)

Objectives Safety Affordable Power backup User friendly
Safety ***** 1 1 1
Affordable 0 ***** 0 0
Power backup 0 0 ***** 0
User friendly 0 1 1 *****

Rank the objectives in order of decreasing value of importance and the list is

  1. Safety.
  2. User friendly.
  3. Power backup.
  4. Affordable

Based on the information gathered through interaction with client, initial survey and completing phase 1.1 the problem definition is formulated as follows

Problem definition version 1.1

Design an attractive tablet dispenser machine for the user which should be safe and user friendly and should be affordable and should have power backup

1.3 Identify constraints

  1. Machine’s cost should not exceed above 5000 Rs.
  2. Machine should not weigh more than 12 kg.
  3. Machine should work for 12 hours continuously.

Problem definition version 1.2

Design an attractive tablet dispenser machine for the user which should be safe and user friendly and should be affordable and should give a power backup. Cost of the machine should not exceed 5000 Rs whereas weight of the machine should not exceed more than 12 kg. But the machine should work for 12 hours continuously.

1.3 identify functions

  1. The machine should be able to hold the load up to 6 gms
  2. The machine should be able to pick and drop medicines from rack
  3. It should place back the medicine to the rack

Problem definition version 1.3

Design an attractive tablet dispenser machine for the user which should be safe and user friendly and should be affordable and should give a power backup. Cost of the machine should not exceed more than 5000 Rs whereas weight of the machine should not exceed more than 12 kg. But the machine should work for 12 hours continuously. The machine should be able to hold the load up to 1.5 kg. Machine designed should even be able to identify the expired medicines and even should be able to display the cost and generate the bill.
