sr.no Questions such as This question helps the designer to
1. What are the tasks you require the machine to do ?
2. What are the pollutants to be removed by the machine? Establish client’s objectives
3. How should the machine be controlled?
4. How much can it cost?
5. How much space will the machine provide Identify constraints
6. At what depth should the machine clean?
7. What measurements in the lake you expect to be cleaned by the machine?
8. Do you want the machine to collect the waste in separate collector? Establish functions
9. Do you want the machine to also remove the garbage thrown on the banks of the river?

Obtain the information through basic survey

sr.no Observation and from Lit.Survey Requirements
1. Based on the weight of the robot so that people should easily use it Robot weight should not exceed 5 kgs
2. Based on the cost of other machines in the market The cost of the robot should be lies between Rs 3000 to 4000
3. It should be environmental friendly and user friendly It should not harm the aquatic animals
4. Time taken should be less than other projects Maximum 3-4 weeks to complete this project
5. Working hours should be more than other machines in market Minimum 6 hours at a time it should work
6. It should clean as much as more area at once Cover at least 30 sq per hour

1.1 Identify client’s objectives

Step 1: Prepare a list of design objectives

Sl.No Objectives
01 Machine should be environmental friendly
02 Machine should work more in less time
03 Machine should weight less and should be small in size.
04 Machine should have good sensing technology.
05 Machine should be portable
06 Machine should clean continuously for 6 hours.

1.2 Prioritize the identified design objectives

Priority among various objectives is set through a technique called Pair-wise Comparison Chart (PCC)

Objectives Safety / stable Environmental friendly Cost effective Durability Total
Safety / stable ***** 0 0 1 1
Environmental friendly 1 ***** 1 1 3
Cost effective 1 0 ***** 1 2
Durability 0 0 0 ***** 0

Rank the objectives in order of decreasing value of importance and the list is

  1. Safety
  2. Environmental friendly
  3. Cost less
  4. Durability

Based on the information gathered through interaction with client, initial survey and completing phase 1.1 the problem definition is formulated as follows

Problem definition version1.1

Design a device that should be able to collect floating waste and clean the lake without harming other aquatic animals. The device should be able to continuously work for longer hours.

1.3 Identify constraints

  1. Building the device should not cost more than Rs4000

  2. It's weight should not exceed more than 5kg

Problem definition version1.2

The machine will automatically sails and cleans ,and collects all garbage and stores in collector.

1.3 Establish functions

  1. It should collect the waste.

  2. It should move the collected waste into storage bin.

1.3 Problem definition

Design a device that should be able to collect floating waste and clean the lake without harming other aquatic animals. The device should be able to continuously work for longer hours. The machine should automatically sail, clean, collects all garbage and store it. Its weight should not exceed more than 5kg. The device should not cost more than 4,000.
