Interview Transcript (English Translation)
Speaker 1 (00:00)
Hi, Sofía. How are you?
Speaker 2 (00:02)
Hi, Dani. How are you?
Speaker 1 (00:04)
Very good, very good. Before we start, I wanted to ask if it’s okay for me to record the interview.
Speaker 2 (00:09)
Yes, of course.
Speaker 1 (00:13)
The goal of this interview is that we want to understand your experience with finding free classrooms or quiet spaces available between classes. So, let’s begin.
Speaker 1 (00:23)
What do you do at the university? Are you a professor, a student?
Speaker 2 (00:28)
I’m a student.
Speaker 1 (00:29)
Ok. Which faculty are you in?
Speaker 2 (00:32)
Engineering.
Speaker 1 (00:33)
Great. How often do you have gaps between classes during the week?
Speaker 2 (00:37)
Uh… let’s say this semester is a bit full. But only on Mondays.
Speaker 1 (00:43)
Ok, ok. And during those gaps, what do you usually do?
Speaker 2 (00:47)
Study.
Speaker 1 (00:49)
Alright—tell me, when was the last time you needed an empty space, a quiet place?
Speaker 2 (00:58)
Yeah, it happens to me quite often. Let’s say I really like a spot in the library, but it’s usually full, and there aren’t many places where you can actually feel comfortable.
Speaker 1 (01:09)
Sure. If that spot is full, what do you usually do?
Speaker 2 (01:12)
Uh… I try to look for another one around there, but honestly I end up feeling kind of lost.
Speaker 1 (01:19)
Of course, that happens. And around what time do you have that gap?
Speaker 2 (01:27)
It’s from 12:30 to 5:00 pm.
Speaker 1 (01:32)
Ah, yes. That’s a big gap—and also basically peak hours. Got it.
What do you like about that place, that spot in the library?
Speaker 2 (01:45)
Well, the table is big, so I can put all my stuff there. I use several things to study. And the couch is really comfortable and has a backrest, so…
Speaker 1 (01:58)
Ah, it’s a very good spot. And you said that this gap happens only on Mondays?
Speaker 2 (02:03)
Yes—Mondays and Fridays, actually.
Speaker 1 (02:05)
Got it. And that spot—
Speaker 1 (02:10)
When it’s already full, what consequences does that have for you?
Speaker 2 (02:15)
Well, suddenly I don’t feel as motivated to study. And then I start just hanging around, but honestly it’s catastrophic when that happens.
Speaker 1 (02:28)
Yeah, yeah. Let’s say on a scale from 1 to 10: how big is this problem for you—of not finding free spaces at the university?
Speaker 2 (02:38)
I think like a 6.
Speaker 1 (02:40)
Ok, got it. And who do you think suffers the most with this problem?
Speaker 1 (02:46)
What kind of person/profile do you think would suffer a lot with this problem?
Speaker 2 (02:50)
People who live far away and suddenly can’t just leave—like they have to stay at the university all day. When you have classes until 6:30 pm, or at 6 pm… or students in the second semester. Well—people in the first semesters who got their classes scheduled late.
Speaker 2 (03:07)
Yes, the classes.
Speaker 1 (03:08)
I mean—later semesters probably have it a bit easier.
Speaker 2 (03:15)
Yeah, they’re more familiar with things and they know what to do during those times. And their schedules might work out better. So I feel it’s not as serious for them.
Speaker 1 (03:22)
And let’s say you already have your spot in the library, but imagine I tell you: “We can create a perfect spot for you.” What would that place have?
Speaker 2 (03:31)
Like I said: a big couch where you can sit in different ways—you could even lie down if you want—and that there’s a table and, like, somewhere to plug in.
Speaker 1 (03:42)
Sure—also that it has internet, and that the place is quiet.
Speaker 2 (03:44)
Exactly—quiet and internet. That’s why the library is incredible.
Speaker 1 (03:48)
Exactly. Great. And last question before I go:
If you had to change one thing about the current situation, what would it be?
Speaker 2 (03:58)
Maybe invest a bit in zones where students can lie down sometimes. Sometimes you don’t want to study and you just want to lie down for a bit and rest. And we only have, like, the RGD terrace and El Bobo, but those spaces are super crowded. We need resting spaces.
Speaker 1 (04:28)
Ok—so it’s as much about resting as studying?
Speaker 2 (04:31)
Exactly.
Speaker 1 (04:32)
Great. Thank you very much, Sofía. Have a good afternoon.
Speaker 2 (04:34)
Thanks, Dani.
