Brainstorming Process
1) Goal of the Brainstorm
The purpose of this brainstorming session was to generate a diverse set of solution ideas that could address the selected problem: students struggling to quickly find suitable available spaces/rooms between classes.
2) Process Followed (Concepts from Class)
We applied a Divergence → Convergence approach:
A) Divergent Phase (Idea Generation)
- We began with a short alignment on the problem statement.
- Each team member proposed ideas without judging feasibility, focusing on quantity and variety.
- We used an additive mindset similar to the class technique of expanding ideas (e.g., building on prior proposals rather than debating them).
- All ideas were captured as short, clear feature statements.
B) Convergent Phase (Organize + Prepare to Select)
- After listing ideas, we grouped them into themes (clusters) so we could later decide what fits an MVP vs. future iterations.
- Example clusters:
- Guidance/Assistance: chatbot + voice interaction
- Navigation/Time-saving: optimal route to a reserved room
- Personalization: recommendations based on history
- Fast verification: camera scan to confirm reservation status
- Automation: schedule → auto-generated plan with reserved room blocks
3) Evidence of Brainstorming (Transcript)
The following transcript is the evidence of the brainstorming activity and contains all ideas produced in the session. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
4) List of Ideas Derived from the Brainstorm
| # | Idea (from brainstorm) | What it enables |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Chatbot inside the app where the user describes what they need and the bot explains how to do it / where to find it | Faster onboarding and easier discovery of functions |
| 2 | Optimal route calculation from current location to the reserved room | Saves time and reduces stress when moving across campus |
| 3 | Room recommendations based on reservation history | Personalization: suggests rooms the user is likely to want/use |
| 4 | Camera scan of room number to check whether it is reserved | Quick real-world validation of room status |
| 5 | Speech-to-text for the chatbot | Hands-free interaction in different conditions |
| 6 | Schedule upload → auto-generated schedule with reservation blocks | Automates selection by filling gaps with suggested/selected rooms |
5) How This Brainstorm Supports the Project
This brainstorm produced ideas that cover different user needs:
- Finding and choosing a suitable space (recommendations, automation)
- Getting there efficiently (optimal route)
- Reducing uncertainty (camera verification)
- Lowering friction to use the system (chatbot + voice)
This wide coverage is a direct outcome of using a divergent ideation strategy first and then organizing ideas through convergent clustering.
