TE70 4S - FresnoSubber/Fresno-and-Co.-Trainbuild-Tomfuckery GitHub Wiki

While the U25B was a venerable locomotive, it can't outlast God, no locomotive can. In 1977, Southern Pacific had some written off U25Bs sitting around and wanted to experiment with them, because it's not SP without fucking the Central California Traction over experimenting with their motive power. So in 1977, Morrison-Knudsen rebuilt four SP U25Bs to run on Sulzer prime movers. To accomplish this, the hood was widened 4 inches and raised up 10 inches for the prime mover. This resulted in U25Bs that loosely resembled GP30s. 50 U25Bs were planned for this rebuild, if only it worked. Yes, because the Sulzer primer was rather stressed to its limit, failures were frequent. The cost of rebuilding the U25s into TE70-4Ss also outweighed the benefits. The units were retired in 1986 and stored in Eugene, Oregon, later sent to a scrapyard in Oakland, California. There were attempts to buy the TE70s for preservation, but this failed, and all 4 units were scrapped by 2008.
