SL 144 - FresnoSubber/Fresno-and-Co.-Trainbuild-Tomfuckery GitHub Wiki

Beginning in 1974, to cater to the industrial market that their popular tonners used to dominate (namely the 44 and 70 tons), GE conceived their SL series for both domestic and international use.

The SL-144 is both the largest and fastest example of the SLs, with a maximum weight rating of 144t (hence the name) and a top speed of 35mph to boot. It was large enough to where the Chicago & North Western and Burlington Northern had two on hand (albeit these were the slightly lighter SL-136) possibly in an attempt to save fuel after the 1973 oil crisis. A total of 56 SL-144s (including less ballasted variants) were built between August 1974 and 1989.
