The Nippon Sharyo DMU Set is Nippon Sharyo's one and, so far, only attempt at diesel multiple units for the North American Railroad market. The cars were first manufactured in Nippon Sharyo's Toyokawa Facility in Nagoya, Japan before final assembly in Nippon Sharyo's Rochelle, Illinois shops. They were built in time to meet Tier 4 Emission Standards using a refined version of Cummins's QSK19 engine, aptly named the "QSK19-R". The first cars were finished in 2013 following orders by both the Union Pearson Express in Canada and the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit in California, with the first entering service on the UPX in 2015. However, you already know the fucky history with QSK19s. Crankshaft failures were common on the units at first. Both SMART and UPX would fix their units by 2017.

Interestingly, the units were also designed in mind to be easily converted to Electric Multiple Units. This might come in handy following California's plans to have zero-emissions on railroads by 2060.
