The NW1 is one of a few Winton-Engined Switchers built by the Electro Motive Corporation between 1937 and 1939 with 27 examples. The engines mostly worked as well as early diesels did, not excellent, not terrible. Just your typical early diesel locomotive. MSTL's D538 is the only surviving example, preserved at the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
