MK6000AC - FresnoSubber/Fresno-and-Co.-Trainbuild-Tomfuckery GitHub Wiki

The Morrison-Knudsen 6,000hp Alternating Current is an unbuilt offering in MK Rail's MKx000 series of diesel locomotives. Production would've started in August 1994 and ended in December 1999, one month after the merger between MK Rail successor MotivePower Industries (MPI) and the Westinghouse Air Brake Company (WABCo), creating Wabtec. Those built after Morrison-Knudsen's bankruptcy declaration in May 1996 would've likely have been renamed to "MP6000AC" to reflect the spun off firm's new name and their desire to distance themselves from the sinking ship that was their parent company.

Due to the existence of Canadian Pacific MLW M640 #4744's DC to AC conversion in the mid-1980s using rotating equipment made by Brown, Boveri & Company (later ABB), and the fact M-K were planning to build AC variants of their locomotives, we're able to put together a data sheet reflecting what these locomotives could've been like had any been built.

Notes

(1) A de-rated, 5,500hp version of this locomotive was also offered, the MK5500AC.

(2) 42" wheels were optional for those fitted with the Dofasco trucks. Could also be ordered with the "what if" M-K/MPI Passive Steering C type trucks for those who want something akin to GE's Steerable trucks or EMD's HTCRs.

(3) Values shown here are taken from the ABB 6-FXA 7059, which is similar.

(4) AC electrical gear is three-phase. Value shown here is for a single phase; the value used by RLC PT2 should be 3 times the value shown. This is done by typing "*3" (without quotes) after the number value when editing the locomotive config in the E2 editor.

(5) Later locomotives would presumably have fully automatic start.
