Two SSE M424Ms lumber their way down to Rockfort with some autoracks.

The M424M is what happens when a railroad trusts you so much that they drag you into rebuilding some 40-year-old shitboxes to Tier 4 Standards. California, am I right? sitcom laughter

So, SSE got some M424s from the Montreal Locomotive Works (via Morrison Knudsen) in 1980 to start slowly phasing out the GP18s around the Stockton area. They did their jobs of lighter and faster duties quite well, so well that the SSE had kept them up to the 2020s. That's where the Tier 4 shit comes in. The SSE was looking for a way to further its development on a cleaner locomotive roster. Then they remembered that the Knoxville Locomotive Works existed, since SSE got some NZE10Bs to replace the remaining SW9s in the Port of Stockton. They would hold knoxville at gunpoint convince KLW to rebuild their M424s. This is the result, 16V4000R41 powered M424s, with a new hood and 100 extra horses to squeeze on too.
