The Pioneer Zephyr, before it was called the Pioneer Zephyr, on an advertising postcard.

The Pioneer Zephyr is America’s second streamlined internal-combustion locomotive, after Union Pacific’s M-10000. It was built in 1934 for its namesake train, the CBQ Pioneer Zephyr, then called the Burlington Zephyr. It was taken on tour across the United States to demonstrate the idea of streamlined diesels, for CBQ 9900 was and still is considered to be America’s first successful diesel streamliner. It was successful enough to where the CBQ ordered 2 more, 9901 and 9902, for the Twin Cities Zephyr, another, 9903, for the Mark Twain Zephyr, and the Maine Central and Boston & Maine both ordered a set, The Flying Yankee. All sets were retired by the 1960s. 9900 is preserved at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, Illinois, 9903 is currently being restored in Trego, Wisconsin (although the arrest of Greg Vreeland in September 2024 has likely hindered progress), and the Flying Yankee set is currently awaiting restoration in Nashau, New Hampshire.
