Installation

Windows 10 / 11

  1. Download simple_organizer_windows_v3.5.1.zip from the Releases page.
  2. Extract the zip. It contains simple_organizer.exe and README.md.
  3. Double-click simple_organizer.exe. No installation is needed.
  4. If Windows Defender SmartScreen warns: right-click the exe → Properties → Unblock, or click More info → Run anyway. The exe is not code-signed yet.

You can keep the exe anywhere — even inside the folder you want to organise (e.g. Downloads). Simple Organizer never moves its own exe.

Updating

Replace the old exe with the new one. Settings, rules, undo history and staged files are kept, because they are stored outside the program folder (see Data and Settings).

Only one instance

Simple Organizer runs only once at a time. Starting it a second time brings the open window to the front instead of opening another one.

Linux

Debian, Ubuntu, Simple OS — the .deb package

Since v3.5.0 every release has a Debian package (simple-organizer_3.5.1_all.deb, plus its .sha256). It needs Debian 12 / Ubuntu 22.04 or newer and installs python3-tk along with it:

sudo apt install ./simple-organizer_3.5.1_all.deb

Simple Organizer is then in the app menu (Utilities) and starts with simple-organizer. To update, install the newer package the same way; to remove it: sudo apt remove simple-organizer (your settings, rules and history stay in your home folder, see Data and Settings). It works the same way on Simple OS.

Other distributions — from source

Simple Organizer runs directly from source and only needs Python 3.10+ with Tkinter:

# Fedora / Bazzite
sudo dnf install python3-tkinter

# Debian / Ubuntu
sudo apt install python3-tk

git clone https://github.com/FreakySneaky787/Simple-Organizer.git
cd Simple-Organizer
python3 main.py

To get a single executable file, build it yourself — see Building from Source.

Adding Simple Organizer to the app menu

mkdir -p ~/.local/share/applications

cat > ~/.local/share/applications/simple-organizer.desktop << 'DESK'
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Simple Organizer
Comment=Safe file organiser with undo support
Exec=python3 /full/path/to/Simple-Organizer/main.py
Icon=/full/path/to/Simple-Organizer/icon.png
Terminal=false
Type=Application
Categories=Utility;
DESK

chmod +x ~/.local/share/applications/simple-organizer.desktop
update-desktop-database ~/.local/share/applications
  • Bazzite / KDE Plasma: run kbuildsycoca6 --noincremental if the icon does not appear.
  • GNOME: wrap the path in quotes if it contains spaces.
  • If you built a binary, use Exec="/full/path/to/simple_organizer" instead.

macOS

Not supported.

Verifying a download (Windows)

The .sha256 file next to the zip on the Releases page contains the SHA-256 checksum of the exe (not of the zip):

Get-FileHash simple_organizer_windows_v3.5.1\simple_organizer.exe -Algorithm SHA256

Compare the printed hash with the content of simple_organizer_windows_v3.5.1.sha256.
