Duplicates - FreakySneaky787/Simple-Organizer GitHub Wiki
Every scan also looks for byte-identical files in the scanned files. The Duplicates tab shows them in groups.
- Files are grouped by size (cheap).
- Only files with the same size are compared by their SHA-256 checksum.
Not checked:
-
empty files — they are all "identical", and trashing e.g. empty
__init__.pyfiles would break projects; - files larger than 500 MB;
- online-only cloud files (OneDrive, Dropbox, iCloud) — reading them would download them;
- several hard links to the same file — they count as one file.
The log tells you how many files were skipped and why. On very large folders the check stops after a generous time limit and says so; the groups found until then are correct.
- Open the Duplicates tab after a scan.
- Select the copies you want to remove — click,
Ctrl+clickfor more,Shift+clickfor a range. Click a group row to expand or collapse it. - Move selected to Trash — at least one file of every group must stay unselected; otherwise the button is disabled.
- Confirm.
Files go to the Recycle Bin / Trash and can be restored from there. Nothing is permanently deleted:
- Before a file is trashed, Simple Organizer checks that a copy you keep still exists with the same content (size and SHA-256). If it was deleted or changed since the scan, the file stays in place.
- Files on network drives have no Recycle Bin and are left in place (with a message).
- If Windows wants to delete a file permanently (e.g. too large for the Recycle Bin), it asks first — the question appears above Simple Organizer.
- On Linux,
gio trashortrash-putis used; otherwise Simple Organizer uses the freedesktop.org Trash directly (on USB sticks and other partitions the drive's own.Trash-<uid>folder).
Trashed files are removed from the Preview, so Organize never tries to move them.
