It is not recommended to run Freelancer: HD Edition on Windows XP since the mod specifically focusses on supporting modern operating systems and running smoothly on there. If you tried to run the mod on Windows XP regardless, you may have seen the following error message:

To fix this, in the EXE folder of Freelancer: HD Edition installation directory, delete the dinput8.dll file. Freelancer: HD Edition should now run, but you may still encounter the following error message when launching the game:

Despite this message, the game still runs without issues. Though you can get rid of the error message by deleting the flplusplus.dll file in the EXE folder of your Freelancer: HD Edition installation directory. flplusplus is a nice plugin that adds some additional features to the game, but it is targeted towards later versions of MSVC, which are unfortunately not supported on Windows XP.
