Is Freelancer: HD Edition compatible with other mods?

At this time it's not; we've made the decision to enhance other gameplay aspects of Freelancer besides textures. As a result, all changes combined aren't compatible with most total conversion mods.

However, we've had some ideas to create a dynamic configurator tool which will allow you to select which components of Freelancer: HD Edition you'd like to install. This way making the mod compatible with other mods will be much easier.

Do I need to install any patches before or after installing Freelancer: HD Edition?

Not at all. When installing Freelancer: HD Edition, all you need is an unmodified copy of vanilla Freelancer. After successfully installing Freelancer: HD Edition, your mod installation will include everything you need out of the box. The mod is built on top of the official 1.1 patch and JFLP which is the successor to the unofficial 1.4 patch and SDK/Quickfix. Moreover, the mod includes almost every known vanilla game bug fix and quality of life improvement. Applying any of the patches manually to your HD Edition installation will cause these additional bug fixes and improvements to be lost, making your gameplay experience worse.

Can the installer options be modified after installing Freelancer: HD Edition?

Unfortunately not. The only way to modify the options post-install is to do it all manually. Depending on the option this may or may not be a big hassle. Therefore, reinstalling the mod may be the easiest way.

We are working on a mod launcher which allows you to change every single option before launching the game. However, it's still far from finished.

Can I play on vanilla servers with Freelancer: HD Edition?

Yes! The main goal of this mod is to enhance the vanilla gameplay experience as much as possible while still remaining compatibility with vanilla servers. Therefore, players can use this mod to play on any vanilla servers without compatibility issues.

Though please keep in mind that Freelancer: HD Edition offers some visual enhancements that may be considered cheating by some server owners.

I've found a bug or other issue. What's the best way to report it?

Please first check our wiki if the issue is already known, or if there's already a simple troubleshooting guide to fixing it. If there isn't, either create an issue on this GitHub repository, or let us know on our Discord server:

Will new content e.g. new systems, ships, bases, factions, equipment ever be added to Freelancer: HD Edition?

Not at this time since the main goal of this project is to enhance the gameplay experience as much as possible while still remaining compatibility with vanilla Freelancer. Major changes such as adding new ships or modifying bases would most likely result in the mod no longer being compatible with vanilla servers. Though we might incorporate a few of those changes as an optional extension after the main project is finished. However, we can't promise anything at the moment.

Can I see the Freelancer: HD Edition installer source code?

Yes of course, here's the installer's GitHub page: https://github.com/oliverpechey/Freelancer-hd-edition-install-script.

Could you add an open source license to Freelancer: HD Edition?

We wish this would've been easier said than done. Unfortunately due to the fact that this mod contains copyrighted material, we can't give it all away under a permissive open source license. In the event that we ever find a way around this, the license we'll add to this mod repository will most likely be restrictive. However, it'll at least allow mod creators to use all of Freelancer: HD Edition in their mod.

After installing Freelancer: HD Edition, my antivirus keeps saying one of the files is classified as a virus. What do I do?

This is definitely a false positive since Freelancer: HD Edition doesn't contain any viruses. If our true intention was to infect as many systems as possible with viruses, the last thing we'd probably think of is doing that via a Freelancer mod.

One solution is to add Freelancer: HD Edition's installation directory to your antivirus' exclusion list. If you don't trust it for whatever reason, most of the time you can simply delete the file in question and play the mod without it.

Does Freelancer: HD Edition work on Linux?

We did our best to make Freelancer: HD Edition compatible with as many systems as possible, even Linux systems. However, if you decide to use this mod with Linux, your mileage may vary. From our testing the mod works best when using Lutris. If you experience any compatibility issues, the hints in the warning message box you'll see at the start of the installation might be useful.
