Kalulu Game: Syllable Identification

Inputs

  • Syllable List: Each syllable consists of 1–3 letters and represents 1–2 grapheme-phoneme (GP) correspondences.

Gameplay

  • The player hears a syllable and must click on its correct written form.
  • Goal: Correctly identify 7 targets to complete the session.

Target Selection

  • 70% of targets come from the current lesson.
  • 30% of targets (if available) come from previous lessons.

Distractor Selection

  • Distractors can come from the current or previous lessons.
  • Distractors must not have the same phoneme representation as the target.
  • An additional distractor is created by reversing the grapheme order of the target (e.g., "la" becomes "al").

Difficulty Levels

Game difficulty adjusts based on:

  • Number of possible appearance spots for items.
  • Spawn rate (speed and frequency of item appearance).

Remediation Strategy

  • After 1 error: No change; the game continues as normal.
  • After 2 errors: Kalulu repeats the instructions to the player.
  • After 3 errors: Kalulu highlights the correct response to support learning.

Notes

  • The system prioritizes creating a balanced challenge: familiar targets reinforced with careful distractor design.
  • The design supports progressive learning by mixing new and previously learned syllables.
