Kalulu Game: Syllable Identification
Inputs
- Syllable List: Each syllable consists of 1–3 letters and represents 1–2 grapheme-phoneme (GP) correspondences.
⸻
Gameplay
- The player hears a syllable and must click on its correct written form.
- Goal: Correctly identify 7 targets to complete the session.
⸻
Target Selection
- 70% of targets come from the current lesson.
- 30% of targets (if available) come from previous lessons.
⸻
Distractor Selection
- Distractors can come from the current or previous lessons.
- Distractors must not have the same phoneme representation as the target.
- An additional distractor is created by reversing the grapheme order of the target (e.g., "la" becomes "al").
⸻
Difficulty Levels
Game difficulty adjusts based on:
- Number of possible appearance spots for items.
- Spawn rate (speed and frequency of item appearance).
⸻
Remediation Strategy
- After 1 error: No change; the game continues as normal.
- After 2 errors: Kalulu repeats the instructions to the player.
- After 3 errors: Kalulu highlights the correct response to support learning.
⸻
Notes
- The system prioritizes creating a balanced challenge: familiar targets reinforced with careful distractor design.
- The design supports progressive learning by mixing new and previously learned syllables.
