Interacting with the Game
As the game is text-based, all interactions occur through the terminal.
Shop
In the shop, players may choose to buy, sell, or rearrange pets, buy food, freeze/unfreeze pets or foods, roll the shop, and end their turn. Each action must be initiated by inputting the corresponding option in the shop menu that appears.
Battle
In battle, players only choose to progress to the next "step" in the battle by pressing Enter
.
How Stuff Works
Shop
Each pet and food has a tier, which determines when they can appear in the shop. Tier 1 items appear starting at Turn 1, and successive tiers start appearing at odd-numbered terms.
Buying Pets
For 3 gold, players may buy a pet from one of the shop slots and place it onto their team. The new pet may be placed into an empty space on the player's team, or onto a space that already contains a pet. In the latter case, placing a pet onto another pet of the same species prompts the player to combine the two. If the pets are of different species, the new pet is placed, shifting all others to the right to fill empty spaces as necessary.
A team may have no more than 5 pets at once.
Selling Pets
Pets may be sold to free up space on a player's team. Doing so rewards the player with extra gold (for this shop turn only) equal to the sold pet's level, plus any bonuses. Sold pets are effectively deleted and cannot ever be repurchased.
Rearranging Pets
Pets may be moved among the 5 team slots freely while in the shop. Pets of the same species may be combined by moving one on top of the other, while any two pets' positions may be changed to better suit an evolving strategy.
Buying Food
Food may be purchased at the stated cost. Most food costs 3 gold, and any food with a different cost will outright state it.
Foods either provide stat boosts to pet(s) or provide a perk to aid the pet in battle. Certain stat boosting foods are "distributed" among several random pets. Perks, rather than increasing the raw stats of a pet, provide an effect in battle, such as reducing incoming damage or increasing the pet's damage dealt.

Freezing Items
Freezing pets and/or foods in the shop prevents them from being removed from the shop unless purchased or unfrozen. Frozen items do not get randomized at the start of a new turn or when rolling the shop.
Rolling
When the shop has little of interest, rolling it (that is, randomizing its items) is a wise idea. Rolling replaces each unfrozen item in the shop with a new valid item, at a cost of 1 gold. At the start of each turn, the shop is rolled, before pet abilities trigger.
Ending Turn
Upon ending their turn, pet abilities with an "end of turn" trigger activate, and the entire team is finalized in preparation for battle.
Battle
The front-most pet of each team attack each other, dealing damage to the opposition equal to their own attack. Pet abilities trigger accordingly, including at the start of battle.
