18. Onboarding Guidelines (Adapted from 18(#ref18))

18.1. General Onboarding

18.1.1. Instructions need to always remain available for the user.

18.1.2. Provide corrective feedback to inform the user whether they understood and performed the task well.

18.1.3. Use visual cues, as they are persistent and good spatial indicators.

18.1.4. Combine visual, audio, and haptic instruction modalities carefully, and avoid touching the novice, whether real or virtual, to maintain social boundaries.

18.1.5. Favor context-based onboarding by integrating instructions into meaningful tasks to enhance learner engagement and understanding of functionality and its real-world application.

18.2. Instruction-assisted Onboarding

18.2.1. Spend time demonstrating the controllers to learners and familiarizing them with the controls before demonstrating application features and functionalities.

18.2.2. Experts require a mirrored view for effective guidance.

18.2.3. Onboarding tools should enable sharing detailed execution steps, not just outcomes, to improve learner understanding.

19. Best Practices for Immersive Learning Design (Adapted from 19)

19.1. Define the learning objectives for the immersive experience and make sure that they are well aligned with the learning goals.

19.2. Use appropriate technology based on the learning objectives and the target audience.

19.3. Design the experience to be interactive and engaging, allow for meaningful exploration and interaction.

19.4. Use appropriate content for effective learning.

19.5. Give clear guidance for navigation and interaction.

19.6. Track progress by incorporating feedback and assessment mechanisms.

19.7. Assess the effectiveness of the immersive learning experience regularly and refine it to make improvements.

19.8. Design collaborative experiences, allowing for teamwork and sharing of knowledge and resources.

19.9. Use the experience to create social connections and build communities.

19.10. Use realistic simulations to mimic learning in real world environments.
