Da Rulz (Standard Modes)

This includes rules for both Normal and Swap mode. Click here for MiniHunt rules.

THE GOAL:

Runners have to beat the game. For vanilla, this simply means defeating Bowser and collecting the Grand Star.

Hunters have a different goal depending on the mode.

  • NORMAL: Stop the Runners. This usually just means beating them up.
  • SWAP: Defeat a Runner to become a Runner. Hunters can't win in this mode, so their goal is to become a Runner.

Runners only have a certain amount of lives. When they run out:

  • NORMAL: They become Hunters. After all Runners are eliminated, Hunters win.
  • SWAP: Whoever killed them (or a random player, if no one did) becomes a Runner.

THE TIMER:

Runners have a timer for when they can leave a stage. The time starts at one of the following, whichever is lowest:

  • 4 minutes, or whatever the host set
  • 1.5 minutes per Star available (outside of the Bowser fights)
  • 0 seconds, if all stars are collected OR if the Bowser key in a Bowser level is collected The timer is reduced by 1 minute for each star collected, or reduced according to the amount of stars available.

When multiple Runners are in a stage together, their time is shared. Hunters are able to leave stages whenever they please.

That's pretty much all of the rules. Now for what isn't allowed in gameplay.

NOT ALLOWED:

  • Skipping ahead: Some players might be clever and try to use Mips Clip or BLJs to skip chunks of the game. Unless this is an any% run, they will be warped back to the start if they try.
  • Camping: Runners should not hide in unreachable areas. Hunters should not sit in levels, waiting for others to enter. Trying to stay in text boxes or menus for too long will be punished or prevented. Standing next to Stars to prevent Runners from collecting them is also frowned upon.
  • Stalling: Runners should not run around aimlessly. This does nothing but waste everyone's time. Runners will be punished for constantly entering the same areas over and over.
  • Cross-Teaming: If you're Hunter, you're Hunter. You can't grab Stars, Red Coins, or secrets. You can attack King Whomp, hit exclamation boxes, etc, but this helps the Runners. Don't do it. Pushing the Cap Switches generally helps the Runners too.

MORALLY AMBIGUOUS ACTS:

These are technically allowed, but may annoy some people.

  • Glitches: Some runners may try clipping through walls, especially in Hazy Maze Cave. Try to avoid this if you're playing with Hunters who cannot handle this.
  • Holdable Objects: Hunters can pick up Tuxie to prevent Runners from benefitting from them. This is somewhat annoying, but even worse in 120 star runs. Don't be surprised if people complain. Holding Bowser is also possible as a Hunter, but can be more easily dealt with.
  • Trapping Runners: In BBH and HMC, there are elevators. Hunters could try using these to stop Runners from getting anywhere. Again, this is annoying.
  • WATER: Some romhacks (vanilla WDW does not) require raising and lowering the water to progress. Hunters can prevent Runners from making progress by constantly changing the water level. It WILL upset people.
