Reading Notes for Class 12, Self-Paced Ops 201

Objective

Today's reading is relevant to what we are studying in lecture as it introduces us to the concept of adapting an old PC to be used as a router/for other uses using pfSense. There are advantages to doing so using the free version of the platform and advantages to using the commercial version as well, depending on the needs of the user.

Reading Comprehension

Title = Introduction to pfSense: An Open-Source Firewall and Router Platform

  1. List some popular uses for pfSense. pfSense is very flexible and can be easily adapted to numerous applications ranging from a home router to a firewall for a large corporate network. Popular uses for pfSense include (1) LAN/WAN router, (2) Internet cafes, (3) Wireless hotspot, (4) VPN router, (5) Firewall, (6) DHCP/DNS server, (7) Wireless access point, (8) Transparent squid proxy server, (9) multi wan router or load balancer, (10) DNS blacklist, or for (11) port forwarding/NAT (network address translation).
  2. What are the hardware requirements for setting up a pfSense router? In order to set up a pfSense router, you need an old computer with at least two network cards installed.
  3. Where can you find support options for pfSense users? Free support is available through forums, mailing lists, and also on IRC. The company that founded pfSense also offers commercial support (designed for users running pfSense in an enterprise environment).
  4. How can you access the automatic configuration backup utility in pfSense? Commercial support subscribers can access the automatic configuration backup utility.
  5. Reflect on the importance of cultural awareness in the field of network security and administration. How might cultural differences influence decision-making and problem-solving when dealing with virtual routers and firewalls, like pfSense, in a global context? The biggest cultural difference I can think of that would influence decision-making in regard to network security and administration is the security/privacy expectation which has the potential to vary across different cultures. That being said, it is important to be aware of these differences in the event that a member of a culture different from one's own requests aid in setting up a virtual router or firewall as the customer's needs may be different than what is expected.
