Abandoned and Alone

Panini was left as a baby at an orphanage on the outskirts of a market town. As a half-elf, he always felt like an outsider. Other children either teased him for his elven heritage or for not being fully human. Growing up, he felt isolated and distant from the rest of the world. But the melodies played by street performers caught his heart. Their music, free and full of life, stirred something deep within him.

Unable to afford an instrument, Panini scavenged scraps from the market to craft a makeshift lute. Every night, after the other orphans had fallen asleep, he would sneak up to the rooftop and practice. His music was his escape, a way to express his longing, sadness, and the dreams he kept hidden from the world.

Elara’s Mischief and Connection

Among the other orphans was Elara, a clever and mischievous girl who always seemed to find joy in causing trouble. For weeks, she secretly watched Panini play, pulling small pranks on him while he practiced on the rooftop by tying his strings wrong or hiding his lute. But her pranks were never malicious. They were just playful. One night, Panini caught her spying, and although he was embarrassed, he let her stay without saying a word. From that night on, Elara listened in silence and a wordless bond began to grow between them.

Elara was the first person who truly saw Panini for who he was. She loved his music, and her laughter filled the spaces between his notes. They became inseparable, dreaming of a life beyond the orphanage. Together they slipped away and stepped into the wider world.

Life on the Streets

The two survived by performing on street corners and in taverns. Panini played his lute while Elara danced and charmed the crowds, often lifting coin purses from unsuspecting patrons. Their life was full of adventure. They traveled from town to town, meeting new faces and sharing moments that felt like they could last forever.

However, as the years passed, Elara began to fall ill. What started as a simple cough and occasional fever soon worsened into something far more sinister. Desperate to save her, Panini spent every coin they had visiting healers, herbalists, and even shady alchemists, but no one could offer a cure.

Elara's Final Moments

Despite his best efforts, Elara’s condition continued to decline. On a cold winter’s night, with the sound of Panini’s lute playing a soft, final lullaby, Elara passed away. Grief-stricken, Panini buried her in an unmarked grave outside the town, in a quiet place where he could return and play for her. His one and only family was gone.

Panini’s Motivations

  • 1. Discover the Cause of Elara’s Illness: The mystery of Elara’s sickness haunts Panini. He feels an unshakable need to uncover the truth behind her illness, whether it was a natural disease, a curse, or something else entirely. Solving this mystery is his number one priority.

  • 2. Uncover His Own Origins: While uncovering his parentage and elven heritage is important to Panini, it isn’t his primary focus. Clues about his family’s history could still emerge, leading him to ancient elven enclaves, noble bloodlines, or dark secrets about why he was abandoned. However, this search remains secondary to his deeper mission of solving the mystery behind Elara's illness.
