Fibre Arts

email update from Liz

  • We've welcomed Jack, a cover stitch machine, to the FA room this month. The machine belongs to Andy, who has kindly loaned it to DoES. The Fibre Arts room has been rearranged to accomodate the coverstitch machine. We've ensured that the knitting machine is significantly further away from the door than it use to be, ensuring it stays safe and accessible.

  • Some of the sewing machines have been left in a nonworking state. If they stop working could people please raise an issue (ideal) or leave a note on the machine so people are not wasting time trying to use inoperable machines and we can organise them getting seen to.

  • Andy discussed broken machines in more depth. Suggestion is to put up signage to make this clearer to people using the machines. Make sure the names of the machines are clear so we can track which are breaking
  • Cover stitch. Still being installed. Needs induction process setting up.

Somebody-should issue triage

  • Toilet related vinyl cutting #1915 #1987 #804 Jackie has shown terry how to use the cutter

  • People who make things at DoES #1523 Jackie to do this
  • Badge maker #2087 Needs blanks to make progress, Jackie to investigate.
  • Pat test appliances #1860 Needs action fairly urgently. Repair cafe volunteers interested to learn. Could do a specific hack the space day, possibly towards the end of Nov. Adrian, Andy and Mike to liaise. Mike to lead this issue.

Agenda items meeting

Finances

  • Bumping along, not getting worse. £228 profit on most recent
  • Not including most recent loss of permanent desks
  • No more rent increases due
  • Rates reduced but may increase next tax year
  • No we need to look at prices in terms of costs v projections
  • Jackie wondered if we need to reorganise space, Chris asked if we need to consider downsizing, perhaps a future gazing discussion?
  • Jackie to ask Julian about Sonoff data to evaluate cost of specific spaces eg lasercutter cost v benefit
  • General impression is we've steadied ship but need to get back to building up the buffer
  • Michael talked about evaluating the offer, and sanity check what is needed/wanted in terms of machines. eg laser cutters and 3d printers are constantly in use at Cambridge. This accelerated when they moved to Bambu because of ease of use. What is the case here?
  • Is there value in running more introduction to workshops to gauge which areas are of most interest to inform future gazing
  • This has wandered away from finance so we're drawing a line but worth considering.

Hack the Space days (added by Adrian)

  • Not really working, not many people coming.
  • Equally community meeting disrupts hacking that is happening
  • Could it be more of an event less frequently? eg every 6 months
  • Could it be specific, to particular jobs. How would this be triaged?
  • Could we ask on google groups what needs working on, to focus community on work needed to be done
  • Would a whiteboard with issues help this engagement?
  • Does the teams approach help and could that inform?
  • Eds github interface might encourage more contributions

Actions

  • Organise an event on 17th Jan (Jackie)
  • Organise a Pat test event (Mike)
  • Raise an issue on google groups to ask for what needs doing and for people to do it (Jackie)
  • Set up whiteboard to give another route to contribute (Chris)

Any Other Business
