Attendees

Attendees: Kris and Sarah from Safe Space Merseyside were here initially to share details about being a safe space; Mike; Liz; Snoof; Chris H; Chris T; Jackie (Chair); Adrian (Minutes)

Kris from Safe Space Merseyside is attending to tell us about being a safe space - letting them speak first as they don't necessarily want to attend the entire meeting.

  • They're a directory of companies/organisations which provide safe spaces
    • Place where trans+ (nonbinary, etc.) folk feel welcome just as they are
    • Where they're gendered as they say they'd like to be
    • Won't face debate, etc. about their gender
    • Protected within the space. So others would be called out if they were seen misgendering people, etc.
    • Can use whichever toilets they prefer (not an issue for us as our toilets aren't gendered)
  • Mostly on Insta, and have Facebook. Moving towards being a CIC
  • They can point us at some materials about how to deal with people mis-gendering others
  • They've left some business cards and can send us some posters
  • [ACTION] Snoof to send Safe Space Merseyside a short bio to add to their directory

    • To be discussed later
  • Find out what workshops people want to attend (Jackie)
    • To be discussed later
  • Ask Matt Murphy about viability of student summer workshop access rates (Jackie)
    • Jackie chased him but hasn't heard back. Bit late for summer access so we'll close this.

    • Has made a start. Will put together an outline to circulate and then we can fill them in, hopefully in time for the next meeting

TEAM UPDATES

3D Printing

  • Bed height issues with Marcus are solved, Jackie has still had failed prints.
  • The two Ultimakers are running nicely at the moment

Laser

  • Lens still needs replacing on Tony
  • Gerald has been problematic - turning the laser on and/or off when it shouldn't be. Needs the vertical alignment to be checked
  • Sheila mostly okay, but just recently has had issues with the lid safety cut-out switch triggering incorrectly.
  • The beds for all of them are dirty
  • Maybe we should split Gerald's bed into a few sections to make it easier to remove, and so making cleaning, etc. easier.
  • [ACTION] Mike to raise an issue about splitting Gerald's bed, and also email it to the Google Group and put a sign up to let the wider community
  • We'll plan to give the spare laser-cutter Karl to Birkenhack so they'll get
  • [ACTION] Mike to liaise with Birkenhack to give them laser-cutter Karl

Fibre Arts

  • It's getting cluttered again.
  • Can people please try to keep it tidier, push chairs back in, not leave things out, etc.
  • Overlocker Bernie isn't running at the moment.
  • [ACTION] Liz to open an issue about overlocker Bernie not working. Issue opened. Issue closed. Bernie is now working again.

Somebody-should issue triage

  • Nothing prepared this month

Agenda items meeting

  • Finances

    • Made a small profit last month
    • Had a couple of extra desks of late with the students, but their placements have come to an end
    • Are the deposits a deterrent? There were a couple of folk at Maker Night looking to take membership out, but were dissuaded (might still join) by the deposit. It's there to dissuade theft, etc. but question about whether it's actually appropriate
  • How can we all bring more people into the space? We need to increase DoES' income. Another 4 desk members, or 10 workshop members, or 17 off-peak workshop members, or... How do we find them? What can you do to help with that? (Adrian)

    • We're planning a free co-working day on 8th August
    • 30th August suggestion for some mini-workshops. It's not clear who is involved, or how/why that specific date was chosen.
    • What's the process of
  • Workshops. Related to the previous item, but focused on workshop events following the workshop survey (Adrian)

    • Liz has run two workshops, one on a Thurs eve, one on a Saturday. Offering a discount to DoES members didn't seem to particularly affect signups. For those sort of workshops the lighting in the Events Space isn't conducive to evening events. Mostly folk from outside, seemingly mostly people who'd heard about it at Makefest.
    • Liz suggested it might be worth looking at how much ads on Eventbrite are, as that could be worth trying to see if it helps
    • Adrian has set up Mobilizon on events.doesliverpool.com which he's using for the DoES Salon talks, and others can use it too
    • The DoES calendar is the canonical location for whether
    • For events being booked in at the moment, people who'd like DoES to help with promo should email details to hello@ and Jackie will either update it or forward details to Neil

Any Other Business

  • Nothing

Date of next meeting

  • Sunday 7th September 2025
