aka: Saoirse D'arcy, Sleepy Saoirse, Pharmacist Zero, Boring Zero, etc
Hailing from a completely mundane timeline with neither magic nor genedrugs, Sleepy was a normal PharmD-in-training prior to be snatched by Síle. Sleepy's body was destroyed and their soul was placed in Daoirse's body, supposedly to be burned as fuel to power up Daoirse's limited magical capabilities, although Síle may have done this just to set Daoirse up for failure. While Daoirse's usage of "soul magic" is clumsy, Sleepy appears to be a savant at this art when outside of their home "mundane" timeline. Thus, Daoirse was never able to properly burn Sleepy, a failure Síle ruthlessly exploited. Now that Síle is dead, the duo are quietly working in the background on a number of projects, including a way to create a proper body for Sleepy before the combined toll for two souls sharing the same nervous system gives Daoirse's body permanent brain damage.
Daiorse's body is capable of xenoexpression, but because Daoirse is underweight, the duo sticks to their body's natural state even when switching from person to person. Unless Daoirse is inactive for more than a day, Daoirse almost always chooses their clothing for the day, so the sense of style on their body is also relatively consistent. In other words -- telling them apart is usually down to voice and behavior. (See "Which one am I talking to?" below)
Sleepy is capable of leaving Daoirse's body for short periods of time as a free-floating soul that is only slightly "anchored" to Daoirse. While in this form, they are usually invisible, but they like to take on the following forms to talk to people:
- The ki ghosts used by Gotenks, because Sleepy likes the anime and thinks that's a funny form to use (1 ft tall)
- A ghostly version of their hyena fursona (2 ft tall)
- A pale blue representation of their human body, which looks similar to Zero's but very slightly taller and lacking a throat scar
- Prone to panic — the genedrugs in Daoirse's body helps prevent attacks, but Sleepy is generally a lot more anxious
- Actually finished their degree at Cal; very knowledgable about chemistry and conventional drugs (but not genedrugs)
- Has taken up programming with Daoirse, together forming "the Yeen Team"
- Agnostic and a democratic socialist
- Surprisingly decent at home cooking
- Vegan, to the extent they can be in a body that absolutely requires meat to survive
- Does not trust housecats, with the exception of Mamoru
- Children make them uncomfortable
Sleepy shies away from conflict, but if forced to fight, their control of soul magic can greatly empower Daoirse's body. They rely on Daoirse's knowledge of combat to actually control the body however -- a fight with only Sleepy will quickly become a panicked clusterfuck. Sleepy does not know martial arts besides a few basic grab releases and has zero interest in learning. That being said, Sleepy does enjoy (read: forces themself to engage in) jogging, which has helped keep Daoirse's body from completely deteriorating.
Given that two souls inhabit one body, it isn't always obvious to outsiders who is "driving" Daoirse's body. They are also capable of both "driving" at the same time to control different body parts, and in rare situations they will struggle for control (usually out of confusion, panic, or a joke rather an actual internal discord). They both have a deep understanding of each other and can convincingly pretend mimic each other's speech and mannerisms. Compounding the problem is that the soul that is not driving can go "inactive," effectively becoming unconscious.
It is impossible for outsiders — Mamoru being the sole exception — to know if one or both souls are "active" at the same time. If you are talking to Sleepy, you cannot be sure Daoirse is not listening. That being said, there are a few tells for determining who is actually driving:
- Daoirse (and Zero) have damaged vocal chords resulting in the body's "chest voice" sounding unusually androgynous. Daoirse (and Zero) therefore speak in "head voice." Sleepy, whose vocal chords were not ripped out, and a bit more comfortable in androgyny, still uses a relaxed "chest voice" which would sound feminine if they still had a body but sounds masculine on Daoirse's vocal chords.
- Daoirse speaks with a bit of a monotone; Sleepy has an Irish lilt (and a bit of a stammer)
- Daoirse generally uses stilted speech; Sleepy is more casual and sometimes drops in surfer lingo
- Daoirse has a resting bitch face; Sleepy is slightly more neutral
- Daoirse's battle-hardened mind scans every room she enters and every person she sees; Sleepy is less vigilant
- Daoirse is heavily emotionally repressed; Sleepy only tries to hide negative feelings
These are general rules of thumb, and are not always constant. A drunk Daoirse will drop the monotone, and a scared Saoirse may put on Daoirse's "tough guy" façade.
[When it is obviously Sleepy, or the two are trading off for rapid-fire dialogue, I will use a different Tupper for Sleepy-in-Dee's body. If it's obviously Daoirse, I will use the Daoirse tupper. If it's ambiguous, I will also use the Daoirse tupper, since most people would be likely to assume they are speaking to Daoirse — or don't even know Sleepy exists.]
Originally mortal enemies given that Daoirse was actively trying to annihilate Sleepy's soul, the two quickly realized that occasional cooperation is the best way to avoid Síle's wrath. Sometimes that involved allowing Daoirse to burn part of Sleepy's soul, which has left Sleepy with few memories of the "mundane" timeline. Not really having anywhere to turn or anyone else to talk to put Sleepy in a vulnerable position, but their capability of dominating Daoirse's body if they pleased means the two were on much more even footing than one might expect. After several cooperative success, Daoirse and Sleepy gradually began working together more often than not. This is not to say they don't know failure: a collaborative suicide attempt gone disastrously wrong put them under close supervision from Síle which ended only with Síle's death. With their shared enemy dead, the two attempted to build a life for themselves, but the paranoia from living under Síle left them unable to function in society. Once again, they turned inward, creating a strong bond built on genuine concern and trust.
It has been many years since Síle's death. The duo are still reclusive, skittish, and paranoid, tinkering away at goodness-knows-what in their workshop. But they do not relish their agoraphobia, and in recent months have graduated from a less social room service job into working the bar at the hotel's restaurant. They remain collaborative, being each other's harshest critic yet also their strongest advocate. Proposing any solution to their shared-body predicament that involves the destruction of either soul will be met with total hostility.
Sleepy and Zero were already vaguely familiar with each other well before Síle crossed timelines. Zero often had dreams of a mundane life in a pharmacy, or stress dreams about making rent. Sleepy likewise dreamed of the apocalypse. Once they actually met each other, they realized they were not entirely strangers. Sleepy was adamant that their dreams were "just electrical noise," but over time has relented and even apologized to Zero for doubting the other's soul-connection theory.
Sleepy is still a bit uneasy about Zero. Zero's willingness to make selfish decisions and devout Catholicism both make Sleepy uncomfortable, but as Sleepy has become more comfortable with Daoirse, they have likewise also become more accepting of Zero.
