Jang‐mi the Younger - DimethylSulfate/drooldick GitHub Wiki

AKA: Jang-mi Kang, 강장미, Jamie, JmtY, "the mayor of this fucking town"

Jang-mi Kang the Younger is known to Licentia as the antisocial cachaemite who hangs around Zero, or to some, the guard who corralled you back into your apartment after you had a few too many orange cocktails. For years she preferred to stay in the shadows of Zero's fame, but after reaching critical levels of boredom one afternoon and mad at some recent policy decisions, Jang-mi applied for the Los Caídos mayoral race. To everyone's surprise, she won. Flexing her newly-discovered talent for swaying city council and city staff towards her favor, she now balances her busy schedule between boring meetings and raising "too many" kids with help of her partner, Zero.

Although Los Caídos technically includes Taqfleck, she has essentially no control over the commune, nor does she particularly care to. Instead, most of Jang-mi's constituents are the non-infected who live in the city proper, forever uneasy at the horde living just beyond their borders. Jang-mi has found politics to be a very interesting game, and the stakes are just about high enough for her to actually care.

Combat

Jang-mi needs some sort of excitement in her life to keep from "going crazy," and while wandering the Bay Area she usually found that in combat. Although she has a moderate understanding of taekwondo, Jang-mi's first real combat was a firefight while motorcycling on a twisty mountain road, and she's been chasing that high ever since. Her concealed carry license allows the simple Glock she always keeps on her person, but she has a far more powerful weapon too. As she considers herself practical, she will always attempt to shoot her enemies before engaging in melee, unless there is a very good reason not to. A frequent user of the Dallas Outskirts' gun range, Jang-mi has earned a reputation for being a crack shot when using either of her trusty handguns.

Like most cachaemites, Jang-mi is capable of super-strength and super-speed. She has also developed zeitgabber endurance, but it's less than that of Zero. She can also see well in the dark, although not quite as well as a typical cachaemite due to having a light-reflecting lens in only one of her eyes.

Jang-mi and Zero are both in an awkward state where their combat experience means they could easily body almost any normal civilian in Licentia, including those who have enrolled in AthPro, but they are well behind Licentia's elite. However, they are roughly evenly matched against each other, and occasionally spar from time to time to placate Zero's paranoia or Jang-mi's boredom. But this is never particularly intense -- both are painfully aware of the fact that if they strongbow, there is a decent chance they could actually kill each other.

Relationships

with Zero

Exactly how the two met is a question the couple refuses to answer, but is known that they arrived in Los Caídos together in 2017 to found what is now called Taqfleck.

Outsiders may not realize they are close, as JmtY and Zero often tease each other harshly and with completely straight faces. Usually this is just how their senses of humor tend to work together. Indeed, having gone through an apocalypse together, they have a strong bond and a deep understanding of each other's strengths and weaknesses, and they tend to be quite honest with each other.

That's not to say they always get along. Close friends know that these two have broken up twice — the first time when Zero got pregnant, the second time in the fallout of the Zeromorph incident. Jang-mi has always had a strong dislike for Takii, and the idea of having her partner start a family with him greatly upset her. The second time was instigated by Zero, but not in the immediate aftermath of her transformation — it was after the family left Licentia and Zero realized she was completely in over her head without the aid of the horde. Jang-mi had the good sense to realize Zero wasn't in her right mind and managed to convince her to return to Licentia, then give her "some space." Even now, they fear they might be a match of convenience rather than true compatibility, especially seeing how their counterparts have split on not exactly amicable terms.

Jang-mi's distaste for public displays of affection mean they are often mistaken for good friends (or enemies), and Zero does her best to keep her family out of the spotlight. The lack of private locations in Licentia does mean they have been caught in the act of "donating" blood, which lead to a rumor that Zero was actually Jang-mi's thrall. This rumor was killed by post-concussion Kelly trying to take advantage of it and announcing that Jang-mi therefore had to be killed, which everyone thought was a bit heavy-handed. Heavy also was the hand that crushed Kelly's chest for these remarks.

with Kelly

Jang-mi cannot stand Kelly, and it's not difficult to see why. In addition to the aforementioned rumor-mongering, Jang-mi has also been a victim of more direct harassment at Kelly's hands. There was a period where Kelly was in prison and Jang-mi plus Zero were not in Licentia, and now that neither are true anymore, Kelly has returned to stalking the family. Their rivalry is, in both party's point-of-view, Jang-mi's fault: Zero was close with Kelly around late 2017, so when Jang-mi broke up with Zero over the pregnancy, Kelly's opinion of the cachaemite was forever soured. After a Kelly's TBI, her obsession with Zero turned that bad impression into "righteous" disdain. Kelly would remind Jang-mi that she was "convenient, not chosen" and try to convince Zero to break up with her. The more well-connected and physically stronger Jang-mi had no patience for this and humiliated Kelly by scheduling her to do jobs that the TBI made difficult or impossible, such as accounting, or draining her blood.

The two have had an uneasy truce for about two years now, brokered by Zero. Jang-mi still clearly holds a grudge, but Kelly seems to have moved on. Jang-mi suspects Kelly has not truly "forgiven" her, but has no evidence beyond a gut feeling. To make matters worse, due to a clerical error, the two currently live in the same apartment building.
