Re-using the map-app

We can now use the same map-app code for different 'variants'. For details of how this works, see this issue comment.

This mechanism is sufficient for current needs. It may need to be extended if, for example, we need to add 'plugins'to some variants. When we get to that point, we should revisit the capabilities of require.js
