FastConnect vs IPSec VPN in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)

Overview

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) provides multiple connectivity options to connect an on-premises data center with OCI. The two most commonly used options are:

  • FastConnect – Dedicated private connection between On-Premises and OCI.
  • IPSec VPN – Encrypted connection over the public internet.

The choice depends on bandwidth, latency, security, reliability, and business requirements.

What is FastConnect?

Definition

FastConnect is a dedicated private network connection between your on-premises environment and OCI.

Unlike IPSec VPN, FastConnect does not use the public internet for data transfer. Traffic travels through a private connection provided by Oracle or a connectivity partner.

FastConnect provides high bandwidth, low latency, and more predictable network performance.

          |
          |
         VCN

FastConnect Features

  • Private dedicated connection
  • Does not traverse the public internet
  • High bandwidth options available
  • Lower latency
  • Consistent network performance
  • Suitable for large enterprise workloads
  • Supports private peering and public peering
  • Can be combined with IPSec VPN for backup connectivity

FastConnect Example

A banking organization runs:

  • Core banking applications on-premises
  • Databases hosted in OCI

Requirements:

  • High-speed connectivity
  • Low latency
  • Large data transfers
  • 24/7 operations

Solution:

  • Configure FastConnect between the data center and OCI.

Result:

  • Stable performance
  • Faster database communication
  • Reduced network latency

What is IPSec VPN?

Definition

IPSec VPN provides a secure encrypted connection between an on-premises network and OCI using the public internet.

It uses IPSec tunnels to encrypt traffic before transmission.

IPSec VPN is a cost-effective and quick way to connect on-premises environments to OCI.

IPSec VPN Features

  • Uses public internet
  • Encrypted communication
  • Quick to deploy
  • Lower cost
  • Suitable for small and medium workloads
  • Supports BGP or static routing
  • Includes redundant VPN tunnels for high availability

IPSec VPN Example

A company wants to connect its branch office to OCI.

Requirements:

  • Secure communication
  • Low implementation cost
  • Quick deployment

Solution:

  • Configure Site-to-Site IPSec VPN.

Result:

  • Secure encrypted connection
  • Minimal setup cost
  • Faster deployment

FastConnect vs IPSec VPN Comparison

Feature FastConnect IPSec VPN
Connection Type Dedicated Private Connection Encrypted Internet Connection
Uses Public Internet No Yes
Security Private Network IPSec Encryption
Bandwidth Higher Lower
Latency Lower Higher
Performance Consistent Internet Dependent
Reliability Higher Depends on ISP and Internet
Cost Higher Lower
Deployment Time Longer Faster
Best For Enterprise Workloads Small/Medium Workloads

OCI Interview Scenario

Requirement

An organization has:

  • On-Premises Data Center
  • OCI Mumbai Region
  • Mission-critical applications
  • Large daily data transfer

Recommended Solution

Use:

  • FastConnect as Primary Connection
  • IPSec VPN as Backup Connection

Benefits:

  • High performance during normal operations
  • Secure backup connectivity during FastConnect failures

BGP in FastConnect and IPSec VPN

Both FastConnect and IPSec VPN can use:

  • BGP (Border Gateway Protocol)
  • Dynamic route exchange
  • Automatic route advertisement
  • Automatic failover in some designs

Example

  • Oracle ASN = 31898
  • Customer ASN = 65001

BGP exchanges routes between:

  • On-Premises Network
  • OCI DRG

This enables dynamic routing and easier network management.

Real-World Example

A company has:

  • Primary Data Center in Delhi
  • OCI Mumbai Region
  • DR Region in Hyderabad

Requirements:

  • Less than 10 ms latency
  • Continuous database synchronization
  • Secure connectivity

Implementation:

  • FastConnect for primary traffic
  • IPSec VPN for backup path
  • DRG attached to OCI VCNs
  • BGP enabled using ASN values

Result:

  • Reliable connectivity
  • High performance
  • Automatic route exchange
  • Backup connectivity available during failures

Interview Answer

What is the difference between FastConnect and IPSec VPN?

FastConnect is a dedicated private connection between an on-premises environment and OCI that provides higher bandwidth, lower latency, and predictable performance because it does not use the public internet. IPSec VPN creates an encrypted tunnel over the internet and is quicker and less expensive to deploy. In enterprise environments, FastConnect is typically used as the primary connection, while IPSec VPN is configured as a backup connection for high availability.
