D: Basic Operations in GH - DavidJenny/Digitales-Entwerfen-ZHAW GitHub Wiki

Here you can find a summary of basic Grasshopper operations.

Additional information on the use of specific components can be found in Grasshopper Docs.

Vectors

A vector is a quantity that has both size and direction. Cambridge Dictionary

In Grasshopper, vectors are controlled through a direction controlled with coordinates and a length (or amplitude). They are used to move elements around the modelling space.

Planes

Planes can be thought of as a zero-based, one-dimensional list containing four elements: the plane’s origin (point3D), the plane’s X axis direction (vector3d), the plane’s Y axis direction (vector3d), and the plane’s Z axis direction (vector3d) (Rhino Developer Forum)

This information can get extracted from them, and they can be manipulated with movement and rotation.

Planes are helpful to use as the base for the creation of geometry.

planes + lines

Planes can also be created along lines and curves.

Curves

Rhino has multiple types of Curves available, which have different characteristics.

Type Description
Line Formed by connecting 2 points.
Polylines / Degree 1 Curves Formed by straight segments connecting points directly from start to finish.
Interpolated Curve Smooth curve calculated to pass directly through a user-defined series of input points.
NURBS Curve A flexible mathematical curve defined by a degree, a set of weighted control points, and a knot vector.

It is possible to divide curves by quantity of points or by distance.

Surfaces

Rhino creates Surfaces using mathematically defined, infinitely thin and flexible NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) geometry. These are some Surface operations available.

It is also possible to Evaluate Surface and extract Iso Curve in Grasshopper. Evaluate Surface allows extracting information: position, frame, and orientations (Normal, U direction, V direction) at a specific parameter.

Arrays

Arrays allow aligning and multiplying geometry in different ways. The components also provide the transformation or vector information.
