property urls - DataDock/datadock GitHub Wiki

In order to utilise the full potential of the Web of Data, each column of data is defined using URIs rather than plain text. DataDock automatically generates these URIs (known as predicates in Linked Data) based on the column headings from your source data file.

On the advanced tab during the import process, you can change these URIs to other values and make use of your own organisation's vocabularies, taxonomies, ontologies and/or data models, or your can make use of those published by others as Linked Open Data (LOD) vocabularies.

Choosing or creating your own Linked Open Data vocabulary forms part of your wider data publishing strategy, if you are comfortable with the concept of LOD vocabularies, you can edit these in the Advanced tab, if not you can simply leave the automatically generated URIs in place. If you change the URI and wish to go back to using the auto-generated URI, there is a reset button to the right of the URI textbox.

To enter a property URL you can either enter the full URL (e.g. http://xmlns.com/foaf/0.1/name), or you can use a shortened form consisting of a prefix followed by a : followed by a suffix part. Datadock uses the service at prefix.cc to look-up the correct expansion for a prefix. So if you type foaf: into the property URL box, Datadock will lookup the foaf prefix at prefix.cc and expand it to its full value http://xmlns.com/foaf/0.1/. Anything you type following the : will be appended to the value that was found at prefix.cc.

When prefix.cc has multiple possible expansions for a prefix, Datadock will always select the first one returned by the prefix.cc service as this is the one that is the most popular expansion. If you disagree with the selection, you will have to instead enter the property URL as a full URI. However if this is the case, please also take the time to head over to prefix.cc, search for the prefix and then either vote for your preferred expansion (using the + and - buttons) or suggest what you believe is the correct expansion for the prefix.
