Known Differences between OldCantus and NewCantus - DDMAL/CantusDB GitHub Wiki

This page presents a list of known differences between the old and the new Cantus DB. These include:

  • changes/improvements made on purpose;
  • functionalities yet to implement where further discussion is needed.

Discrepancies/bugs not listed here should be reported in the github issues (or email/slack, whatever you prefer).

In the new Cantus DB, so far we spent most of our time on implementing the functionalities, instead of polishing the look of the website. Cosmetic things, such as the font, color, and table styles are likely to be different between the two. No need to report those. If necessary, they will be fixed in the near future.

  • The search bar on the top-right corner: it searches both incipit and Cantus ID.

  • The content of the Date/origin column is not written as hyperlink, because the century/provenance detail page on the old Cantus DB contains nothing but a title.
  • The century filter has more options on the new Cantus DB.

  • Source info (below the function menu): contributor hyperlink is empty because we don’t have users yet.
  • Hyperlinks for the provenance and century are left blank, because their detail pages contain nothing but a title.

Chant search page - http://206.12.93.196/chant-search

  • Chant search is designed differently than the old Cantus DB. The keyword search returns the object if the search term is contained in any of its fields.
  • Chant search has two interfaces in the new Cantus (just like in old Cantus): global search and MS search. The two interfaces are different in old Cantus, but they are intentionally harmonized on new Cantus.
  • There are many options for the keyword search on old Cantus, but in new Cantus we only keep two of them: contains and starts_with.

Chant detail page - e.g., http://206.12.93.196/chants/149258

  • List of concordances and the list of melodies is missing entries from external databases. This feature may not be needed because the same information is available on Cantus Index.

Feast list page - http://206.12.93.196/feasts/

  • Temporale/Sanctorale division not correct. The number of feasts in both categories don't match the record on the old Cantus DB.
  • An updated list of feast names and feast codes will be made, to go with the new categorization rules.

Office list page - http://206.12.93.196/offices/

  • One new office added (AD stands for unknown office).
