Future Content
This is a list of ideas under consideration for future versions. Not everything here is necessarily going to be added. Ideally, I want to balance simplicity and performance with feature-rich functionality. Put another way, I don't want feature creep to turn the basic concept into a cluttered laggy mess.
Sound selection: Alter the sound of the floor mat using various materials: wool to mute the sound, note block to make the mat chime, etc. EDIT: This is still being considered (just released 1.3.0) and have considered various options. I am considering making a decorative version that has no function, and having revisiting the wiki, really like the idea of altering the sound options more than just on/off.
Gold upgrade: I'd like to have some means of allowing non-gold floor mats to also be player-specific, since I think the feature is nice and don't want people to be limited to the appearance of gold floor mats. I'm considering requiring one of the floor mat blocks to be placed on a block of gold to allow this function as a way of tying in the cost in gold. EDIT: This became gilded floor mats in version 1.2.
Probably not making the cut:
Hybrid mats: Allow different types of wooden floor mats to connect to each other. This is pure aesthetics, and not necessarily positive aesthetics. I question if the addition of this feature would be worth the increase in data and code size. Although I might have a way around that if my plan for wands works out....
Energy conduction: If metal floor mats are placed on a block that outputs power, floor mats could be used to charge worn boots or zap things walking on them or something. I don't intend to turn a floor mat into a personal inventory charger, but something quirky like charging boots just seemed neat.
