New in the 0.53b release is the Flight Assist / Rates Setup menu page. This has been designed to give you a much more visual sense of what your individual rates look and feel like.

Listed here are the separate RC rate, Super Rate, and RC Expo for each of the Roll, Pitch, and Yaw axis. These are color-coded to match the graph and the dots on the graph on the right-hand side. The maximum rates in degrees per second is calculated from each of the axis rates and the graph is scaled around this figure. You can use the sliders to alter any of the settings, but the sliders won't move any further if the calculated max degrees per second would exceed 2000.

You can broadly think of the rates like this:

RC Rate is the amount of input your stick produces. 1.0 is a 1 to 1 ratio with the physical controller, while 0.5 would give half the input and 2.0 would double it. A beginner would look to make this smaller to make their inputs less intense.

RC Expo is a way of maxing the centre of the stick less sensitive. An RC Expo of 0 would give a straight linear line, but as the Expo is increased the middle of the line flattens which give more control when you are around the centre of the stick.

Super Rate is a term from BetaFlight. I've left this to describe less on purpose as it effectively combines the RC Rate and RC Expo to both increase the overall degrees per second rate, and the expo curve. You could just alter the Super Rate value and have most of your setup done.

There is help to visualise these rates - as you move your sticks for the 3 axis, you will see the appropriately coloured dot move to show where you are in the curve. The image of the quad will also rotate on the axis at the rate you have set. This makes things very easy to get a feel for how the quad will react to your stick movements before you return to the sim to try them out.

New pilots need not worry about all these figures and graphs and instead use the pre-defined rates. Simply choose your pilot type of Beginner/Intermediate/Expert and your Quad power (Low/Medium/High) and then click on "Show Rates". You can try this out using the visualisation and alter them as you wish. In previous versions of the sim you were able to choose between a radio and gamepad in the pre-defined rates. The different rates still do exist and are chosen depending on if you've defined your controller as a radio/gamepad in the Radio/Joystick setup menu.

If you are new to flying (even virtual flying like this) it's highly recommended you start off with the pilot type of Beginner and the Quad power of "Low (3S)" This setting will give you take off and hover at around 40%-45% of the throttle and the rates are set that even making huge movements of the sticks will not make your quad go instantly out of control.

Any changes you make to your rates will not take effect until you clock on the "Save Rates" button.

There are some slight differences in the flight assist menus in the online game and Quad-Ball. The online game doesn't pause the game (because other people are also playing) so your quad will carry on flying on it's current path/power (so it's best to do any changes on the ground). Quad-Ball has pre-defined rates especially designed for the game and the throttle multiplier is not applicable so the "Quad-Power" dropdown is absent
