Problems

After analyzing the possible problems presented on the padlet, we decided to move forward with these ones (three of them are presented by us):

  1. The difficulty on looking for mentor/monitoring sppaces known as "Monitorias" on the university: We found that the most common practice to find one is to publish the needs on a facebook group and wait for it to be atended by another student.
  2. Deliverys inside the campus: Years ago there was an idea of a proyect named "Comidas en la u", but after the pandemic it disappeared, it was a good idea and helped a lot of students during the semester, the ones that were asking for the deliverys and the ones who actually took them.
  3. Student Brigade (from the padlet): The university has a group of students who get training to respond to different situations across campus, generally emergency situations where someone in the community might be at risk. There are already some communication protocols via phones in campus to communicate emergencies to this group. However, this communication could be done faster and more directly with an app available for the uniandes community, where the brigade could recieve alerts of situations reported by people in campus.
  4. Uniandes newspaper/newsletter: The university has some different activities done weekly, but the information is available on the mail and on printed paper, but it is not easily memorable, or discoverable.

Interviews

Know taking into account the problems that were most interresting for us, we proceeded to make some interviews listed down bellow. But first, here is a summary with the most important parts of the interviews:

Structure

The interview was designed to focus on students' latest experiences with tutoring at the university. We asked questions about whether the student was a tutor, was seeking a tutor, or both. We also wanted to know about the steps the student took before and after the tutoring session, the process of finding a tutoring space, and which features of platform's used on the university the student found valuable. This information would help us to improve the platform in the future:

  • First Part of the interview:
  • Second question it's purpose was
  • Third question it's purpose was

Summary

In the interview the student indicated that the app could be of great value to students who offer tutoring, as it would facilitate the search for students who need tutoring in a specific subject. Additionally, it would eliminate intermediaries that can make communication between tutors and students more complex.

The student also indicated that it would be important for the app to include a tutor profile, in which comments about the tutor could be seen, as well as information that the tutor can provide, such as the grade they received in the subject. Additionally, it would be important for the app to include a chat to facilitate communication between tutors and students. Finally, the student suggested that the app include a calendar in which tutors and students could schedule tutoring sessions, but with knowledge of the topics that will be covered during the session.

Insights

  • What, why, how, who
Situation What Why How Who
1 A tutor wants to give a tutorship to earn some money Because he has needs and the knowledge to help another student in need Usually if the tutor does not have a tutorship on one of the unversity available spaces as Cupitaller, he would search for students in need on the facebook group "Cbus que deberías meter", but it could be tedious as there are a lot of posts each day A student that wants to give a tutorship
2 A student wants to book a tutorship but the spaces on the university are all booked up The student is in need to understand the topics of a class or with a homework The student is going to search for monitors on facebook on groups of the university or from voice to voice recomendations A student who wants to take a tutorship
3 A tutor wants to know how to improve in his tutorships because he wants to do better and get even more recommendations The student is going to ask after a tutorship how it went, but could not always be the truth A student giving the tutorship
4 After the tutorship was taken, the student asks how much was it, but it was more expensive of what he thought so he negociates he is going to negotiate because the price was not talked beforehand after the tutorship the student and the tutor are going to negotiate the price of the tutorship The student and the Tutor whohad the tutorship

3 2

We decided to deliver two journey maps due to the different needs when someone is a student taking a tutorship and someone giving the tutorship

Based on the information provided by the student, it is recommended that the app include the following features:

  • Tutor Search: The app should allow students to search for tutoring by subject, schedule, and location.
  • Tutor Profile: The tutor profile should include information such as the grade earned in the subject, tutoring experience, comments from other students, and availability to give tutoring.
  • Chat: The app should include a chat to facilitate communication between tutors and students.
  • Calendar: The app should include a calendar in which tutors and students can schedule tutoring sessions.

Also, here are some additional suggestions that could be considered for the app:

  • Pricing: The app could offer a variety of pricing options, such as per-session, per-hour, or per-subject.
  • Ratings and Reviews: The app could allow students to rate and review tutors.
  • Payment Processing: The app could integrate with payment processing services to make it easy for students to pay for tutoring sessions.
  • Filters on the tutors search.

These suggestions could be further explored as the app is developed.

Summary

She said that the only resource to get in contact with them is to dial 00000 in the classroom phones. Also, in emergency situations, she said to feel powerless and frustrated as the help arrived 10 to 15 minutes after the call and she was not able to help the people that where having the emergency.

  • Third question it's purpose was to identify if the interviewed person is a possible target audience for this idea.
  • Fourth question it's purpose was to identify the already implemented solutions that the university has worked around and a student is awarded of and recognizes the possible pain points of using those solutions.

Summary

In the interview we did with Gabriel we understood better what the problem with the events and the information of those are. We found it interesting that the university faculties have different newsletters and events and all the information isn't easily accessible and isn't all in one place. As Gabriel described sometimes he can't find information about the events that the university is making, because different faculties send an emails with information about the events and news of the faculty all of them with different senders and to targeted audiences of the faculty, for example, a systems engineer will receive only information related to the faculty of engineering. The problem that students have is mainly that they want to assist with other events made by different faculties this is a big challenge because currently they only receive information about the faculty that the students are currently enrolled in, because of that the student must go to the different faculties and ask the faculty to tell them what events does the faculty are planning for the following month.

Interviews Summary

<Here goes the 5 minutes long interviews summary> https://youtu.be/GTlta5BrvvU

After hearing the ideas and problems of the students, who were our primary target, we decided to address the tutoring/mentoring problem. We believe that this problem has great value for students, as it could help them in a variety of ways, both those who are seeking tutoring and those who are willing to offer it. Additionally, we found the topic to be interesting.

C2 Brainstorm

We define our problem as The difficulty of looking for mentor/monitoring spaces known as "Monitorias" at the university and realize with the interviews and journey map, that the most common practice to find one is to publish the needs on a Facebook group and wait for it to be attended by another student and that makes it quite difficult to find appropriate tutors for a specific subject, and we decided that we want it to improve that aspect of the problem. First, we had to divide the possible solutions into two different groups to make it fair for the two principal actors in the problem (Students and Tutors), then we brainstormed for 15 minutes interpreting the solution we could give to the students, where every group member put a post-it with different ideas this step is called diverge, then we searched for similar post-it's an group them, then we all voted for the three of the best groups of ideas, then we summarize the groups of ideas in just one, this step is called converge. Lastly, we did the Brainstorming and followed the same steps that we did for the student, but now interpreting how the tutors will think about possible solutions.

Now that we selected the Tutoring/Mentorship problem, we decided to continue with the helpful insights found in the interviews and the brainstorming that we did. Here you can find the video of the prototype:
